Kalama's is a beautiful, classic tropical feeling beach near Kailua Beach Park in Kailua with fine powdery white sand. Kalama's gentle waves make it a great beach for beginner surfers and body boarders, and you won't find the same crowds here as you will at Kalama's neighboring beach, Kailua.
Kite boarders like this place for the wind; and children often play inside the break. Plenty of shady spots offer an escape from the sun. It is possible to walk to Kalama from Kailua as they share the same stretch of sand. They also share a view of the Mokulua islands. There are no lifeguards, but the lovely park offers a picnic area, restrooms and showers.

Parking is available off Kalaheo Avenue and a cute little trail leads from the parking lot, past the bathrooms and showers where you can see native vegetation including large beach heliotrope trees, hau bush, beach naupaka and a coconut tree.
The beach front vegetation is mostly beach naupaka with a sprinkling of iron wood, beach heliotrope, coconut trees and hala. It definitely feels like you are on vacation when you are at Kalama's, you are away from the hustle and bustle of the city and no highrises are visable from the beach, even with the recent development boom that has made Kailua look more like California than Hawaii.
Watch out for the Portugese Man-of-War (jellyfish) and stinging limu (seaweed) especially from June through September.
