Hawaiʻi submarine tours are the one ocean experience you can do without getting wet or knowing how to swim. You climb a short ladder into a real passenger submarine, sit by a porthole, and the boat sinks about 100 feet to a coral reef where tropical fish and the occasional reef shark drift past your window. The sub stays down about 45 minutes, then surfaces for a tender boat back to the dock.

Atlantis Submarines is the only operator running passenger subs in the islands. The company has worked here since 1988, starting in Kona on a sub called Atlantis IV (Atlantis Submarines — Our History). For summer 2026 it runs two routes on two islands, with a third location closed.

Two Hawaiʻi locations are operating, and one is closed:

Waikiki, Oʻahu (open). The 64-passenger Atlantis XIV is the largest tourist submarine in the world (Atlantis history). It launches from a tender pier behind the Hilton Hawaiian Village on the western end of Waikiki. The Atlantis ticket office is at 252 Paoa Place. The actual check-in kiosk sits on the beachfront of the Hilton Hawaiian Village at 2005 Kālia Road (Atlantis Waikiki). As of late 2025, the standard adult fare runs in the $130–$180 range and the child fare is around $75 all-in, per the official Atlantis Waikiki page. Confirm current rates before you book. The reef site is in open ocean off Waikiki, and the sub descends to about 100 feet.

Kona, Big Island (open). The 48-passenger Kona sub runs from a check-in office at the Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel (75-5660 Palani Road, Kailua-Kona). Daily departures are scheduled at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. (Atlantis Kona; see also Big Island Guide’s writeup). Current published fares are roughly $160 adult and $72 child, all-in (Atlantis Kona). The dive site is a 25-acre natural coral reef inside Kailua Bay.

Maui (temporarily closed). The Lahaina-area sub remains down per Atlantis’s own history page. If a Maui sub matters to your trip, plan around Oʻahu or Kona instead.

Both operating subs cruise to a typical depth of 100 feet, with a maximum capability of 150 feet, and the underwater portion of the tour lasts about 45 minutes (Atlantis Submarines FAQ).

The reefs the subs visit are not natural showpieces like Hanauma Bay at the surface. They’re working ocean-floor habitats with coral mounds, sandy patches, and old wreckage that has grown over.

Both locations rotate around recognizable Hawaiian reef life: yellow tang, raccoon butterflyfish, Moorish idols, parrotfish, and eels tucked in cracks. White-tip reef sharks slide along the bottom on some trips. Sea turtles show up on a fair number of dives, especially in Kona, though sightings are not guaranteed. Conditions vary, but Hawaiʻi’s leeward coasts often produce good summer visibility, and the in-cabin guide narrates as the sub passes wrecks and notable coral heads.

What you don’t get is the feeling of being in the water. The cabin is dry, air-conditioned, and quiet enough that small kids handle it fine. If you want the actual sensation of being immersed with marine life, a snorkel cruise to Molokini or a guided shore snorkel will get you closer to the reef and may cost less, depending on the tour. The sub is for the people in your group who don’t snorkel: the grandparent, a height-qualified young child, the cousin who’s nervous about open water.

Atlantis tours work well for travelers who fit one of these:

• Families with kids old enough to sit still for an hour (family travel guide) - Visitors who don’t snorkel or aren’t comfortable in open ocean - Cruise passengers with one window of free time in Honolulu or Kailua-Kona - Wheelchair-friendly travelers who can transfer with help (more on that below)

Real constraints to know before you book:

Height minimum. Both subs require children to be at least 36 inches (about 91 cm) tall to ride, with no exceptions. The rule is a U.S. Coast Guard safety standard, not a marketing thing (activity listing). If your child is borderline, measure barefoot before you commit.

The boarding ladder. Passengers climb down a near-vertical ladder from the tender boat into the submarine hatch. It runs roughly 10 to 12 steps depending on the sub, per the activity listings for Kona and Waikiki. Atlantis staff will help, but you do need enough mobility to get yourself down a steep ladder with handrails. Travelers with serious mobility limits should call Atlantis directly to confirm what’s possible on a given sailing (accessibility considerations on the Big Island).

Claustrophobia. The cabin is small but bright, with large round portholes and ceiling lights. Most people who think they’ll feel claustrophobic actually don’t. If confined spaces genuinely panic you, this isn’t the tour to test it on.

Pregnancy and recent surgery. Atlantis advises against the sub for women in late pregnancy. The cabin itself is held at normal surface atmospheric pressure, so passengers do not need to equalize their ears during the dive (Atlantis FAQ). Check the operator’s current medical restrictions and ask your doctor if you have specific concerns.

Skip the sub if everyone in your group already plans to snorkel and you have decent ocean comfort. You’ll see more reef, in better detail, for less money, and you’ll be moving instead of sitting.

Three workable booking paths:

Direct from Atlantis Adventures. The operator’s site lists current schedules and the published fares. This is the cleanest path if your dates are flexible and you want to deal with one party for changes or cancellations.

Through a Hawaiʻi tour aggregator. Sites like Viator’s Big Island page and Viator’s Oʻahu page list the same Atlantis tours alongside other ocean activities. The advantage is bundling. If you’re already booking a luau or a Pearl Harbor tour, dropping the sub into the same cart keeps your bookings in one place.

Through your hotel concierge. Most resorts in Waikiki and Kona have direct booking arrangements and will sometimes throw in shuttle pickup. Worth asking, especially if you’re staying at one of the larger Waikiki properties or a Kona-coast resort with an activity desk.

A few practical tips. Morning departures can be a good bet for calmer surface conditions on Hawaiʻi’s leeward coasts, where afternoon trade winds tend to build. Combo packages that pair the submarine with another tour sometimes price lower per ticket than booking each separately, but check the math before you commit. If you’ve got a rental car, on-site parking is available at both check-in locations and neither requires a shuttle from a remote lot (Atlantis booking notes).

Less than you’d think. The sub cabin is air-conditioned, so a light layer matters more than a swimsuit; you do not get wet on this tour. The tender boat ride out to the sub is short but breezy, so a windbreaker or packable rain shell earns its space in your bag if you’re a chronic chiller.

Bring a real camera or use your phone in low-light mode. The windows are clean and large, but the ambient light is bluish and dim, and most phone cameras need a steady hand to capture sharp shots. Skip flash. It just bounces off the porthole glass.

Because you’re mostly covered and dry on this trip, you don’t need a heavy sunscreen application for the sub itself. Use sun protection before or after as conditions on shore warrant.

And eat something light beforehand. The sub is rock-solid stable underwater, but a few sensitive passengers do feel the swell on the surface portion. A snack 30 minutes before, not a full meal, is the play.

The sub takes about two hours total: check-in, tender out, dive, tender back. That leaves most of a day for something else.

In Waikiki, the sub pairs naturally with a morning Waikiki beach swim or an afternoon Pearl Harbor visit. The check-in kiosk is a 10-minute walk from the Hilton Hawaiian Village lobby and a 15-minute walk from most of central Waikiki.

In Kona, an early sub slot leaves the afternoon free for a Kealakekua Bay snorkel trip or a drive south to Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau Historical Park. If you’re spending a full day in Kailua-Kona, the Atlantis sub plus a manta ray night snorkel makes for a “see the reef twice in one day, dry then wet” itinerary that’s hard to beat for first-timers.

Atlantis also runs a separate Waikiki cruise on a vessel called the Majestic, but that’s a surface boat running a sunset cocktail cruise (drinks and snacks for purchase, not a dinner service) per Majestic Hawaii. Different product, different ticket. Don’t confuse the two when you’re booking. The submarine ticket is the one you want if seeing the reef matters more than seeing the sunset.
