Before You Go

Check Weather First

Hawaii microclimates mean a sunny coast and a rainy trailhead 20 minutes apart. Flash floods happen fast in narrow valleys. Check the forecast for your specific area, not just the island.

Respect Closures

Closed trails are closed for a reason—rockslides, erosion, endangered species nesting, or cultural protocols. Fines start at $500 for trespassing on closed state land. Not worth it.

Start Early

Most Hawaii trails have limited or no lighting. The sun sets fast near the equator with almost no twilight. Popular trailheads like Diamond Head and Manoa Falls fill parking lots by 8 AM.

Tell Someone

Cell coverage is spotty on many trails, especially on Kauai and the Big Island. Leave your itinerary with someone and note your expected return time. Solo hikers should be extra cautious.
