Molokini Crater is the best snorkeling spot in Maui, probably the best in Hawaiʻi, and a strong case for the best in the entire Pacific. It’s a half-sunken volcanic cone three miles off Maui’s south shore — a crescent of rock rising out of the deep with 150-foot underwater visibility, more than 250 reef fish species, and no runoff from shore to cloud the water. The crater is a protected Marine Life Conservation District, so there’s no fishing, no anchoring on coral, and no crowds from shore. You can only get there by boat.
For summer 2026, every Maui boat operator will be running to Molokini daily. The question isn’t whether to go — the answer is yes, especially if it’s your first Maui trip — it’s which boat to book. There are roughly 25 operators running Molokini trips, the pricing ranges from $95 to $250+, and the experiences vary wildly depending on the time of day, the boat size, and how honest the operator is about what you’re actually buying.
