Maui Events in May 2022

Events & Festivals on the Island of Maui

With COVID restrictions no longer imposed on domestic arrivals, Maui is a destination starting to appear on an awful lot of calendars. So too are events on the island.

Of course, we recommend keeping an eye on events as the dates approach. With that being said, here are our recommendations for the top events and festivals coming to Maui this May.

Maui Classical Music Festival

May in Maui is going to be a paradise for classical music lovers. That’s because the island is proudly introducing its renowned Classical Music Festival.

Spanning out across several days, the event will feature numerous performances at three different historic churches on the island. The festival includes eight world-class performers; Yizhak Schotten and Katherine Collier will direct and feature cello, violin, clarinet, piano, and double bass.

The reviews speak for themselves. If you love classical music, you’d be a fool not to attend at least one of the concerts included in this festival, if not several. Even if you’re just a casual music fan or you’re looking to experience some of Hawaii’s most formidable artistic talent, this event is still very much for you.

When: May 13th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd

Where: Various venues (see More Info)

Night at the Old Lahaina Prison

If you’re traveling with kids, this is one of the most fascinating events you will ever find in Hawaii.

The western town of Lahaina is home to an impressive historic building: Hale Pa’ahao/Old Lahaina Prison. Finished in 1853, this jail was specifically constructed to house troublemaking sailors and whalers who were as numerous as they are easy to imagine in cartoon form. Back then, Maui’s solution to the age-old lyrical question “what do you do with a drunken sailor” had a genuine and definitive answer: throw them in Lahaina Prison.

Today, the restored prison is open daily from 10 AM to 4 PM for free. However, on the evening of Saturday, May 21st, the prison will open for a special overnight event. There will be whaling era crafts, snacks, exploration of the compound by lantern light, and continental breakfast the following morning. Camping equipment and toiletries will also be provided.

You won’t find a better opportunity for history, culture, and unique intrigue than this.

When: May 21st - 22nd, 7 PM - 9 AM

Where: Old Lahaina Prison, 187 Prison Street, Lahaina

Solo Artist Exhibition 2022

Featuring artists Terry Lopez and Nancy Young, the Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center is hosting an innovative and exciting art exhibition on May 27th.

This particular exhibition is proudly self-described as “one of the only exhibitions in the state of Hawaii that provides the unique opportunity for artists to be personally involved in all facets of exhibition planning and installation.”

In other words, the whole exhibition is essentially a work of art. For local culture and creativity, you’re not going to find a fresher event than this.

When: Friday, May 27th, 5 PM - 7 PM

Where: Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center, 2841 Baldwin Ave, Makawao

More Info: Solo Artist Exhibition 2022

Revel in the exquisite art presentation, both old and timeless and fresh and innovative. Then explore historic tropical prison grounds at night. One thing is clear - May is set to be a richly awe-inspiring month for Maui.

As always, mahalo, and best wishes for your visit!
