Aloha is the most recognized Hawaiian word on earth. You hear it at the airport, on hotel signs, from strangers on hiking trails. Most visitors understand it as “hello” or “goodbye” and leave it at that.
But aloha is a philosophy, a cultural practice, and — uniquely — a law. Hawaiʻi is the only U.S. state with a statute defining a spiritual concept and requiring government officials to follow it. That alone tells you how seriously this culture takes one word.
