If you're heading to the Big Island in August 2025, you're in for such a treat. It's one of my absolute favorite times to visit the Big Island of Hawaii. The weather is typically warm and sunny, with those gentle trade winds keeping things comfy, and the island's volcanic landscapes, lush rainforests, and stunning beaches are at their prime. August is right in the heart of summer, so the ocean is perfect for snorkeling or just chilling on the black sand shores, but what really makes it special are the events and festivals popping up everywhere. This month celebrates Hawaiian culture, arts, nature, and high-energy sports that highlight the island's deep roots and community spirit. Whether you're into traditional dances, artisan crafts, or adrenaline-pumping competitions, there's something that'll make your trip unforgettable. I've compiled the most popular events happening in August, think cultural immersions and fun gatherings that showcase why the Big Island feels like a living, breathing paradise.
2025 Events and Festivities
Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament
This is a legendary fishing event that's been reeling in excitement since 1959, and if you're into ocean adventures or love watching pros in action, you have to swing by Kailua-Kona for this. It's one of the world's premier big-game fishing tournaments, where teams from all over the globe compete to catch massive marlin, tuna, and other billfish in the deep blue waters off the Kona Coast, known as some of the best fishing grounds on the planet. The tournament kicks off with a festive opening ceremony, including a parade of boats and angler registrations, then dives into five intense days of fishing from Monday to Friday. Expect daily weigh-ins at the Kailua Pier where crowds cheer on the catches (some fish tip the scales at over 1,000 pounds!), plus parties, awards banquets, and even educational talks on marine conservation. It's not just about the competition; it's a celebration of Hawaii's seafaring heritage, featuring live music, local food vendors serving fresh poke and grilled fish, and a family-friendly atmosphere. If you're staying in Kona, book early because hotels fill up fast with anglers and spectators.

Volcano Wood Show Exhibition
If you're exploring the east side near Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, don't miss this biennial showcase; it's a woodwork lover's dream and a beautiful nod to Hawaiian craftsmanship. Held at the Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village, this exhibition showcases stunning pieces from local artisans, including furniture, sculptures, bowls, and intricate carvings crafted from native woods such as koa, ohia, and milo. It's open to pros, novices, and even student woodworkers, so you'll see a mix of traditional Hawaiian styles blended with modern twists. Wander through the gallery Wednesday through Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, chat with the artists about their inspirations (many draw from the island's volcanic energy and ancient forests), and maybe even pick up a unique souvenir. There are often live demonstrations, talks on sustainable woodworking, and a juried competition with awards for creativity and skill. It's free to enter, super inspiring, and pairs perfectly with a hike in the national park, imagine seeing volcanic craters by day and artistic tributes to nature by afternoon. This one's all about appreciating the island's natural resources creatively.
When: July 19th - August 10th
Where: Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village

Queen Lili'uokalani Canoe Race
Wrapping up the month with a bang, this is the world's largest outrigger canoe race, and it's an epic celebration of Hawaiian voyaging heritage right in Kailua-Kona. Over Labor Day weekend, hundreds of paddlers from global teams compete in races spanning 18 miles across the bay, starting with a blessing at 6:00 a.m. and the main event at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. Watch from the shore or pier as colorful canoes slice through the waves; it's thrilling! The weekend features sprints, parties, cultural ceremonies, and awards, accompanied by food vendors, music, and a genuine sense of ohana (family). Named after Hawaii's last queen, it honors her legacy and promotes ocean stewardship. If you're athletic, you could even join a team, but spectating is just as fun.
When: August 28th-September 1st
Where: Kailua-Kona

These events aren't just things to do; they're windows into what makes Hawaii so special, like honoring ancestors through dance, crafting with native materials, or competing on the waves that have shaped generations. If you're visiting, I'd say prioritize the ones that match your interests, maybe start with the Billfish Tournament for that high-energy vibe, then ease into the arts festivals for some chill cultural immersion, and cap it off with the canoe race for an unforgettable send-off.
