2025 Events and Festivities

September is such a wonderful month to be on Maui. The summer crowds have thinned a bit, the ocean is still warm and inviting, and the island settles into a rhythm that feels equal parts local and celebratory. If you’re planning to be on Maui in September 2025, you’re in luck; this is the time of year when cultural festivals, farmers' markets, and community celebrations really shine. From traditional hula competitions to small-town festivals bursting with charm, you’ll find plenty of ways to soak up authentic Hawaiian culture and join the fun right alongside residents. Let’s dive into what’s happening this September on Maui so you can start planning your trip around some unforgettable experiences.

Festivals of Aloha – Maui Nui Style

This island-wide celebration of Hawaiian culture is one of the highlights of the month. The Festivals of Aloha honor traditions through music, hula, arts, and community gatherings. Here are some of the standout events for September:

  • Wailuku First Friday – Sept 5 (6–9 PM): Market Street comes alive with music, food vendors, and art displays. It’s like a big block party where you can stroll, snack, and shop.

  • Aloha Friday at Queen Kaʻahumanu Center – Sept 12 (5–8 PM): Cultural exhibits, hula performances, and local artisans sharing their work.

  • Kū Mai Ka Hula – Sept 12 & 13: Held at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, this is Maui’s only adult hula competition, featuring top hālau (hula schools) from across Hawaiʻi and beyond.

  • Richard Ho‘opi‘i Leo Ki‘eki‘e Falsetto Contest – Sept 20: A unique showcase of Hawaiian falsetto singing, celebrating the late, legendary Richard Ho‘opi‘i. Hosted at The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua.

  • Lānaʻi Ho‘olaule‘a – Sept 27: While this event takes place on the neighboring island of Lānaʻi, it’s part of the series and worth the ferry trip if you want to experience an authentic community celebration with crafts, music, and island food.

This festival is all about keeping Hawaiian culture alive and sharing it with both locals and visitors — it’s the kind of event where you don’t just watch, you feel connected to the island’s traditions.
