Kalihiwai Beach

Kalihiwai is a crescent-shaped bay on Kauai's north shore, tucked between Kilauea and Princeville. It is a local favorite. Tourists rarely find it, which is a big part of its appeal.

The Setting

The Kalihiwai River empties into the ocean here, creating a split personality beach. On one side you have the river, calm and flat, good for kayaking and stand-up paddling. On the other side you have the ocean, with a beach break that draws surfers when conditions line up.

Tall ironwood trees line the back of the sand and throw generous shade. Bring a blanket, set up under the trees, and you have one of the better picnic spots on the island.

Swimming and Safety

Ocean swimming is not ideal here. Currents can be strong, and there is no lifeguard. The river side is calmer for wading, but keep kids close and monitor conditions. Winter swells make the ocean side rough. Summer is mellower, though you should still watch for rip currents and slippery rocks near the shore.

Getting There

Take Highway 56 west from Kilauea toward Princeville. Turn right on Kalihiwai Road just before mile marker 24. Follow it to the end where you will find a small parking area near the beach. There are no facilities and no lifeguard. If you need a rental car on Kauai, this beach is about 30 minutes from the airport.

Best Time to Visit

Summer brings calmer water and safer conditions for wading in the shallows. The river is good for kayaking year-round, though after heavy rain it can run high and muddy. Winter surf draws experienced surfers to the break but makes the beach less family-friendly.
