Obon (Bon Dance) Season Begins

Obon is a Japanese Buddhist tradition honoring ancestors, and Hawaii's version is unlike anywhere else in the world. Community bon dances happen at Buddhist temples across Oahu every weekend from mid-June through August. Expect taiko drums, folk dancing, and some of the best temple food you will find anywhere. Early-season venues include Moiliili Hongwanji and Haleiwa Jodo Mission. Check the Honolulu Star-Advertiser for the full weekly temple schedule.

When: Weekends starting mid-to-late June through August 2026

Where: Various Buddhist temples across Oahu

June 2026 on Oahu stacks cultural weight and community energy into a single month. King Kamehameha Day is the anchor, but the Pan-Pacific Festival, the start of Obon season, and Honolulu Pride round out a calendar that gives visitors a real window into island life beyond the beach.
