Things to Do on Kauai without A Rental Car

Rental cars on Kauai run $80-150/day during peak season, and they sell out entirely some weeks. The good news: you can skip the rental counter and still have a solid trip. It takes more planning, but it’s doable — and you’ll save hundreds. (If you do decide to rent, Discount Hawaii Car Rental often has the best rates.)

Here’s how to make it work.

Pick Your Base Strategically

Where you stay determines how car-free your trip can be. Three areas work best:

Poipu (South Shore) — the most walkable visitor area on Kauai. Beaches, restaurants, shops, and the Kauai Culinary Market are all within walking distance of the major resorts. The Grand Hyatt Kauai and Sheraton Kauai are both right on the beach. This is the safest bet for a car-free trip.

North Shore (Princeville/Hanalei) — more scenic, more remote. Princeville has a small shopping center and the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay. Hanalei town is walkable once you're there, but getting between the two without a car requires planning.

Lihue (East Side) — where the airport is. Less resort-oriented, but the Kauai Marriott is here, the bus hub is here, and you're central to the island's east coast.

Getting Around Without a Car

The Kauai Bus

The Kauai Bus is the island's public transit system. It runs 7 days a week and costs $2 per ride (exact change required) or $20 for a monthly pass. Key routes connect Lihue, Poipu, Kapaa, and Hanalei. The main hub is in Lihue near Kukui Grove Shopping Center.

Coverage is solid along the south, east, and north shores. The west side (Waimea Canyon, Koke'e, Polihale) is not on the route, so you'll need a tour for those destinations. Buses run roughly every 60-90 minutes, and the last runs end around 6-7 PM depending on the route. No late-night service.

Bike Paths

The Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal bike path runs about 5.5 miles along the east shore from Lydgate Beach Park toward Kapaa. It's paved, flat, and scenic — great for getting between Kapaa town and the Coconut Coast beaches without a car. Several shops in Kapaa rent bikes and e-bikes for $25-60/day.

Rideshare

Uber and Lyft operate on Kauai, but driver availability is limited compared to Oahu or Maui. Wait times of 15-30 minutes are common, and surge pricing hits hard during peak hours. Useful for airport transfers and occasional trips, but not reliable as daily transport. Budget $25-40 per ride for most routes.

Mopeds and Scooters

Moped rentals run about $60-80/day. You'll need a valid driver's license. A fun option for short coastal runs but impractical for longer hauls or group travel.

Things to Do Without a Car

Beach Days

Most Kauai resorts are either beachfront or a short walk from the sand. In Poipu, you can walk to Poipu Beach, Brennecke's Beach, and Shipwreck Beach without ever starting an engine. On the North Shore, Hanalei Bay and Pu'u Poa Beach are steps from the major hotels.

Kauai Culinary Market

Every Wednesday from 3:30 PM to 6 PM at The Shops at Kukui'ula in Poipu. Local chefs cook with farm-fresh ingredients, there's live music, and a wine and beer garden. It's walkable from most Poipu accommodations. Free to enter.

Book Tours with Hotel Pickup

This is how car-free visitors access Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast, and Kauai's interior. Many tour operators offer hotel pickup — it adds $10-20 to the price, but you're saving far more by not renting a car.

Companies to check: Roberts Hawaii runs narrated island tours with hotel pickup. Na Pali Coast boat tours (Captain Andy's, Na Pali Riders) depart from Port Allen or Kikiaola Harbor and include shuttle service from some south shore hotels. Helicopter tours (Blue Hawaiian, Jack Harter) operate from Lihue and can arrange transport from nearby hotels.

Spa and Pool Days

The Grand Hyatt Kauai has one of the best resort pool complexes in Hawaii — a saltwater lagoon, water slides, a lazy river, and the Anara Spa. If you're staying there (or at a comparable resort), you don't need to go anywhere some days.

Visiting Kauai without a car won’t be as convenient as visiting with, but it is still quite worth doing and can even present some unique new opportunities to have fun while getting around.
