If you’re among the many, many people looking to rent a car in Honolulu this coming year - good news. The $377 million, years-in-the-making new car rental facility at the airport is open!

The 5-story facility officially opened on December 1st. Numerous big name car companies will be renting vehicles from the facility, including the formerly-bankrupt Hertz; signifying in general the aggressive comeback rental car companies are attempting to make amid the resurgence of tourism nationwide.

Despite the recent added pressure surrounding COVD-19 and its countless effects, construction on this particular project actually dates all the way back to 2016. After several delays, everyone seems thrilled to witness its final completion; no one more so than Governor David Ige himself, who attended the opening ceremony and said “modernization like this CONRAC should be celebrated…”

Given its tremendous size (almost 2 million acres, with space for 4,500 vehicles) it seems plain enough that the travel experience for Honolulu visitors will be improved. However, amid the ongoing war between traditional rental car companies and the industry-shaking Turo, how the future of car rentals in Hawaii will ultimately look is still very much uncertain.

With this new major facility in the heart of the state capital, it’s clear rental car companies are doing everything they can to reconquer the industry.
