Do I Need a License or a Permit to Fish in Hawaii?

The good news for fishing aficionados is that a marine water fishing license is not needed to fish on the shores of the Hawaiian Islands.

What Types of Fish Can I Catch?

• Mahi Mahi (Dolphin Fish)

• Wahoo (related to the Mackerel family of fish species)

• Blue and Striped Marlin

Are Some Species Protected?

What If I Hook a Shark?

The targeting of species of sharks is prohibited, but sometimes they get hungry and are quite opportunistic when it comes to securing a free meal from a fisherman. They have been known to unceremoniously snatch a beautiful tuna right from under your nose.

Sharks are apex predators, and they don’t mind letting you know in no uncertain terms, but they are still majestic creatures deserving of living.

So, what happens if a shark finds itself on the end of your hook?

You must leave the shark in the water. Do not attempt to lift the shark into the boat or drag it on shore for obvious safety reasons, but also you may injure the shark.

Cut the line as close to its mouth as possible to allow its safe release.

You will not be in trouble with the authorities if you are seen to be trying your best to free the shark. However, capturing, killing, or injuring sharks intentionally is a violation of the law.

Are There Some Locations Where Fishing is Prohibited?

Private property is off-limits for visitors without strict approval from the landowners.

In addition to this, there will be signage in areas where fishing is prohibited and any specific times of the day you cannot fish.

Always heed any warnings.

Can I Take a Fishing Tour?

If you feel the need for a fishing adventure, there are tour operators that will gladly help you with your wish. Can I Rent Fishing Equipment?

Also, there are many travel-friendly fishing poles (even small enough to put in your luggage) available to buy before you go. Give it some thought.
