Here are Tips on Navigating Kahului Airport on Maui (OGG):

Up and Away

For those departing, you must know the comfort level of check-in timing.

No one likes to be rushed. It causes unnecessary stress that can lead to a decline in enjoyment right from the get-go.

Make sure you know when to arrive. It will make your life a lot easier if you plan.

How Early Should I Arrive?

Check-in times are recommended between 2 and 2.5 hours before your flight departs. Make time for regular security checks and passenger requirements.

Arrive earlier if you want to eat or look around.

Are There Opening Hours?

Yes, the airport is open from 5:30 am and will close only after the last flight.

Don’t forget this is a whole experience from beginning to end.

Do I Need to Follow the Rules?

Ahh. Yes.

Security procedures, TSA requirements, and additional regulations to be adhered to in other areas you pass through are all for everyone’s safety. Please follow the instructions offered and read the signs posted. If you doubt where to go or what to do, take your concerns to an airport worker. They are there to assist.

We now live in a world of different rules and regulations, so until that changes, it is best you know what you may face and understand why everyone, not just you, needs to obey and follow the direction of workers and officials.

Remember, this is not personal. It’s for everyone’s safety and well-being.

Check Out the Amenities

Do yourself a favor, get to the airport early, and walk around. They are like a town within a town. There are plenty of restaurants, places to grab a quick snack, burger chains, and bars to enable a pre-flight aperitive.

Take advantage of the shops for those last-minute magazines, toiletries, and essential coffee. Shop with local vendors for souvenirs to begin your travel with good memories.

It’s all here. Some towns don’t even have as much to do as an airport does.

Do you know where your departure gate is located? Look closely at the information screen or ask a concierge for assistance. Your information may not be displayed yet if you are there early.

Check out the rest areas and know where the restrooms are to enable a quick freshen-up.

If you are lucky enough, take full advantage of any allowed premium lounges for that next level of comfort.

Additional Things to Keep in Mind

  • Airport Workers are People Too

A stressed traveler is likely to take some of it out on the people who are simply trying to do their job. Don’t make it harder. If things happen, keep your temperament cool and calm, and remember your manners. No one likes a nuisance, especially those you’re traveling with.

  • Need a Driver?

Find out if your accommodation offers airport transfers or wrangle a friend into the “airport run favor” we have all used from time to time. It may cost you a souvenir or a case of beer, but it’s worth it.

  • Know Your Distances

Do you know the distance from your accommodation to the airport?

As a guide, Lahaina is approximately 25 miles. Kihei is approximately 10 miles, and Kaanapali is approximately 29 miles away.

  • Traveling with Pets

Something tells me you already know what to do here, but it goes without saying that if you're traveling with pets, you need to have a plan and know where to go. Check and double-check before you even leave for the airport.

Check-in with airport staff immediately. Don’t leave it until the last minute.

  •  Airport Etiquette

Is there such a thing? You betcha. Don’t forget your manners. Older people may need assistance. Disabled travelers may need more time, as do people with small children. Don’t rush. We’re all human beings here. Excuse me, please, and thank you go a long way.

Ladies and gentlemen, please board your aircraft.

Outside Awareness

Before we even get through the doors, outside areas may need your attention, or at least be mindful of them. Do you have a rental car that needs to be returned? If you’re parking for a while, where are the preferred locations?

Where can your friend drop you off? Is there designated drop-off and pick-up areas?

Find out where to go before your arrival so you don't eat into the precious time you have allocated to… well… eat.

It’s the little things that may trip you up.

Just saying.

A Bit of History

Kahului Airport (OGG) has been a fully operational airport since 1952 and is the primary window of the world on the island of Maui.

A truly international airport receiving overseas, interstate, and inter-island passengers, it is the second largest airport in Hawaii and serves approximately 7000 people daily.

This airport was named after Jim Hogg, a former chief pilot for Hawaiian Airlines. Although the facility was dedicated to him, he chose OGG instead of HOGG.
