Lanai Snorkeling at Hulopoe Bay

Lanai Snorkeling Guide

Best Snorkeling on Lanai

Lanai snorkeling is some of the best in all of Hawaii. The water here regularly hits 100 to 150 feet of visibility, far beyond what you get off the coasts of Maui or Oahu. The reefs are healthy, the crowds are almost nonexistent, and spinner dolphins patrol the shoreline most mornings.

There are two ways to snorkel Lanai. You can drive or walk to Hulopoe Bay on the island's south shore for easy shore snorkeling. Or you can join a boat tour departing from Maui, which drops you at Lanai's coastline without needing to stay on the island at all. Both options are excellent.

Hulopoe Bay — Shore Snorkeling

Hulopoe Bay is Lanai's signature snorkeling spot and a designated marine preserve. The protected status means the reef is dense with coral, tropical fish, sea turtles, and the spinner dolphins that frequent the bay year-round.

The left side of the bay (facing the ocean) near the tide pools has the best reef. Coral starts in just three to four feet of water and extends outward. You will see reef triggerfish, parrotfish, moorish idols, and yellow tangs within minutes of getting in.

Water is calmest before 10 a.m. Morning sessions give you the flattest surface and the best light for seeing the bottom. By afternoon, trade winds pick up and chop builds.

Access is free. The beach has restrooms, outdoor showers, and picnic tables. No gear rental on-site, so bring your own mask, snorkel, and fins.

Boat Tours from Maui to Lanai

Most visitors snorkel Lanai without ever setting foot on the island. Boat tours depart from Lahaina Harbor on Maui and make the 9-mile channel crossing in about 45 minutes. You snorkel along Lanai's south coast, eat lunch, and head back.

Trilogy Excursions runs the original Lanai sailing tour. Their catamarans carry around 50 passengers, and the trip includes snorkel gear, a BBQ lunch on Hulopoe Beach, and time to explore. Trilogy has been doing this route since 1973. Expect to pay $200-250 per adult. Book at sailtrilogy.com.

Expeditions Ferry offers a budget alternative. The Lahaina-Lanai ferry runs five times daily and costs about $30 each way. From Manele Harbor, Hulopoe Bay is a 15 to 20 minute walk downhill. You handle your own gear and food, but you save significantly. Round trip: roughly $60 per person.

If you are renting a car on Maui for the drive to Lahaina, Discount Hawaii Car Rental consistently has the best rates.

Other Lanai Snorkeling Spots

Shark Fin Cove sits along Lanai's southern coastline and is accessible only by boat. The rock formation that gives it its name rises sharply from the water. Beneath the surface, you get wall-style snorkeling with larger marine life including eagle rays and reef sharks.

Manele Bay (the small boat harbor area) has decent snorkeling right off the rocks on the west side. It is not as spectacular as Hulopoe, but it works if the bay is crowded or you want a quick session near the ferry.

The Sweetheart Rock (Puu Pehe) area, just east of Hulopoe, has rocky entries and stronger currents. Experienced snorkelers will find interesting formations and less-visited reef. Stay close to shore and do not attempt this in any swell.

Tips for Snorkeling Lanai

Bring your own gear. There are no snorkel rental shops on Lanai. If you are coming from Maui, pick up gear in Lahaina or Kihei before boarding the ferry or tour boat.

Go in the morning. Wind and chop build throughout the day. By 1 p.m., visibility at Hulopoe drops noticeably on most days.

Watch for currents outside Hulopoe Bay. The bay itself is sheltered, but once you drift past the rocky points on either side, currents pick up fast. Stay inside the bay unless you are a strong swimmer with open-water experience.

Check conditions before you go. Lanai is exposed to north and west swells in winter. The National Weather Service Honolulu marine forecast covers Lanai. If surf is above 3 feet on the south shore, snorkeling quality drops.

Wear reef-safe sunscreen. Hawaii law bans sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. Hulopoe is a marine preserve. Use mineral-based (zinc oxide) sunscreen only.
