Oahu 6-Day Itinerary

Six days lets you explore every side of Oahu — south shore beaches, southeast cliffs, Pearl Harbor, North Shore surf towns, the lush windward coast, and the quieter west side. You'll cover the island thoroughly without feeling rushed.

A rental car is recommended for days 2 through 6.

1 Day 1 - Waikiki & Diamond Head

Sunrise hike up Diamond Head, then settle into Waikiki Beach for the afternoon. Walk Kalakaua Avenue for dinner and people-watching.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Waikiki Beach — Swim, surf, or just walk the two-mile stretch. Outrigger canoe rides and catamaran cruises launch from the sand.
  2. 2 Diamond Head — Reservations required. 1.6-mile round trip, about 90 minutes. Summit views are the best panorama on the south shore.

2 Day 2 - Southeast Coast

The southeast coast from Hanauma Bay to Waimanalo is one of the most scenic drives on the island. Snorkel the volcanic crater, watch the blowhole, hike to the lighthouse, and end at a beach with almost no one on it.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Hanauma BayReservations required. Arrive by 7 AM.
  2. 2 Halona Blowhole — Free roadside overlook. Fires highest with winter swells.
  3. 3 Makapu'u Point — Paved trail to the lighthouse. Whale watching November through May.
  4. 4 Waimanalo Beach — Three miles of sand, Ko'olau mountain views, almost no crowds.

3 Day 3 - Pearl Harbor & Historic Honolulu

Start at Pearl Harbor in the morning, then move downtown for 'Iolani Palace, Punchbowl, and the Bishop Museum. This is a full day of history and culture.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Pearl Harbor — Book tickets at recreation.gov 60 days ahead. Plan 2-3 hours.
  2. 2 'Iolani Palace — The only royal palace on U.S. soil. Budget 90 minutes.
  3. 3 Punchbowl — National Cemetery inside a volcanic crater. Panoramic views of Honolulu.
  4. 4 Bishop Museum — Polynesian history and Hawaiian culture. The Science Adventure Center is great for kids.

4 Day 4 - North Shore

Drive north through the pineapple fields to Oahu's legendary surf coast. Dole Plantation breaks up the drive. The beaches from Waimea Bay to Sunset Beach are world-famous for a reason. Grab shrimp from a food truck in Haleiwa.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Dole Plantation — Pineapple soft serve, garden tours, and the world's largest maze.
  2. 2 Haleiwa Town — Surf shops, art galleries, food trucks. The shrimp trucks are the main event.
  3. 3 Waimea Bay — Summer swimming, winter wave-watching. The rock jump is a local tradition.
  4. 4 Sunset Beach — Wide and sandy, good for an afternoon wind-down.

5 Day 5 - Windward Coast

The windward (east) side of Oahu is the lush, green side. Drive through the Ko'olau mountains to Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, then work your way north past Kaneohe Bay to Kualoa with its movie-set mountain backdrop.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden — 400 acres of tropical plants set against the Ko'olau cliffs. Free admission, no reservations needed.
  2. 2 Byodo-In Temple — A replica of a 900-year-old Japanese temple set in the Valley of the Temples. Peaceful and photogenic.
  3. 3 Kualoa Regional Park — The mountain backdrop here has appeared in dozens of movies. Great for a picnic lunch.
  4. 4 Lanikai Beach — On your way back south, stop at this postcard-perfect beach with the twin Mokulua islands offshore.

6 Day 6 - West Side & Hidden Gems

Most visitors skip the west side and the interior valleys, which means you'll have them mostly to yourself. Hike Manoa Falls in the morning when the light filters through the canopy, then head west to Ka'ena Point for the wildest, most remote stretch of coastline on Oahu.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Manoa Falls Trail — Easy 1.6-mile round trip through a rainforest to a 150-foot waterfall. Muddy when wet, so wear closed-toe shoes.
  2. 2 Ka'ena Point — A 5-mile round trip coastal trail to the northwestern tip of Oahu. Monk seals and albatross nest here. No shade — bring water and sunscreen.
  3. 3 Makaha Beach — A locals' beach on the Waianae coast. Good surf in winter, calm swimming in summer.
  4. 4 Ko Olina Lagoons — Four man-made lagoons with calm, protected water. A relaxing way to cap off the trip.
