Oahu 2-Day Itinerary
Two days on Oahu is a sprint, but the island's south and southeast coasts pack enough into a short drive that you won't feel shortchanged. This itinerary pairs Waikiki and Diamond Head on day one with the southeast coast and North Shore on day two.
A rental car is essential for Day 2. Day 1 works on foot if you're staying in Waikiki.
1 Day 1 - Waikiki & Diamond Head
Start with a sunrise hike up Diamond Head before the heat and the crowds. The 1.6-mile round trip takes about 90 minutes and the views from the summit cover the entire south shore. Spend the afternoon on Waikiki Beach, then drive to Hanauma Bay for snorkeling if time allows (reservations required, closed Mondays and Tuesdays).
Stops for the Day
- 1 Waikiki Beach — Two miles of sand, surf rentals everywhere. Walk Kalakaua Avenue for shops and food.
- 2 Diamond Head State Monument — Book reservations online in advance. The crater trail is paved with stairs near the top. Bring water.
- 3 Hanauma Bay — Volcanic crater turned snorkeling haven. Reservations required. Arrive early for the best visibility.
- 4 Halona Blowhole — Quick roadside stop on the way back. The blowhole fires highest when surf is up.
2 Day 2 - North Shore & Pearl Harbor
This is a full day of driving, but it covers the two things most people come to Oahu for: history and surf culture. Hit Pearl Harbor first thing in the morning (tickets sell out, book at recreation.gov 60 days ahead). Then drive north through the pineapple fields to the legendary surf breaks of the North Shore.
Stops for the Day
- 1 Pearl Harbor National Memorial — Free USS Arizona Memorial tickets go fast. Budget 2-3 hours for the full experience.
- 2 Dole Plantation — Pineapple soft serve and the world's largest maze. A good 45-minute break on the drive north.
- 3 Haleiwa Town — The surf capital of Oahu. Grab shrimp from a food truck, browse the galleries, and soak in the North Shore vibe.
- 4 Sunset Beach — Massive winter waves, mellow summer swimming. Either way, it's a perfect spot to end the day.
Two days barely scratches the surface, but this route hits Oahu's greatest hits. If you have more time, check out our three, five, and seven-day Oahu itineraries.
