Oahu 4-Day Itinerary

Four days gives you enough time to see Oahu's south shore, southeast coast, historic sites, and the North Shore without rushing. Each day focuses on a different region so you're not backtracking across the island.

A rental car is recommended for days 2 through 4. Day 1 works on foot from Waikiki.

1 Day 1 - Waikiki & Diamond Head

Start with a sunrise hike up Diamond Head before the heat sets in. The 1.6-mile round trip takes about 90 minutes and the summit views cover the entire south shore. Spend the afternoon on Waikiki Beach and explore Kalakaua Avenue for dinner.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Waikiki Beach — Two miles of sand with surf rentals, outrigger canoe rides, and beachfront restaurants.
  2. 2 Diamond Head State Monument — Reservations required. Paved trail with stairs near the summit. Bring water and a hat.

2 Day 2 - Southeast Coast

Drive the southeast coast from Hanauma Bay to Waimanalo. This stretch packs snorkeling, blowholes, lighthouse views, and uncrowded beaches into a single morning-to-afternoon loop. Get to Hanauma Bay early — reservations are required and slots fill fast.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Hanauma Bay — World-class snorkeling in a volcanic crater. Arrive by 7 AM for best visibility.
  2. 2 Halona Blowhole — Quick roadside stop. The blowhole fires highest when surf is up.
  3. 3 Makapu'u Point — Paved 1.2-mile trail to the lighthouse lookout. Great whale watching November through May.
  4. 4 Waimanalo Beach — Three-plus miles of white sand backed by the Ko'olau mountains. Fewer crowds than Waikiki.

3 Day 3 - Pearl Harbor & Historic Honolulu

Hit Pearl Harbor first thing — the USS Arizona Memorial tickets are free but sell out fast (book at recreation.gov 60 days ahead). After the memorial, head downtown for 'Iolani Palace and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Pearl Harbor National Memorial — Plan 2-3 hours minimum. The USS Arizona, Battleship Missouri, and Pacific Aviation Museum are all on-site.
  2. 2 'Iolani Palace — The only royal palace on U.S. soil. Guided and self-guided tours run throughout the day.
  3. 3 Punchbowl National Cemetery — Set inside a volcanic crater overlooking Honolulu. A solemn and beautiful spot.
  4. 4 Bishop Museum — Hawaii's largest museum, covering Polynesian history, natural science, and Hawaiian culture. Budget 2 hours.

4 Day 4 - North Shore

The North Shore is about an hour from Waikiki, and the vibe shifts completely when you arrive. Stop at Dole Plantation on the way up, then cruise the legendary surf beaches from Waimea Bay to Sunset Beach. Grab shrimp from a food truck in Haleiwa on the way back.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Dole Plantation — Pineapple soft serve, garden tours, and the world's largest maze. A good 45-minute stop.
  2. 2 Waimea Bay — Calm enough to swim in summer, 30-foot waves in winter. The rock jump on the left side is a rite of passage.
  3. 3 Ehukai Beach (Banzai Pipeline) — The most famous surf break in the world. Watch from the sand.
  4. 4 Sunset Beach — Wide sandy beach, perfect for a late-afternoon wind-down.

Four days covers most of Oahu's highlights. For more time, check out our five and seven-day itineraries, which add the windward coast and west side.
