Maui Helicopter Tours

A helicopter tour is one of the best ways to see Maui. Large sections of the island — the West Maui Mountains' deep interior, Honokōhau Falls (the tallest waterfall in Hawaii at 1,749 ft), the Hāna rainforest, Haleakalā crater routes, and Molokai's north-shore sea cliffs (the world's tallest at 3,000+ ft) — are completely inaccessible by road and unreachable on any reasonable hike. The right route gets you over terrain you simply cannot reach from the highway.

Tours run four shapes: a short West Maui scenic flight, the standard West Maui & Molokai route (the most popular), the Hāna rainforest / Haleakalā route over East Maui valleys, waterfalls, and crater terrain, and a 75–90-min premium route + landing such as Blue Hawaiian's Ulupalakua Ranch stop on the slopes of Haleakalā. Pricing generally runs from about $300 to $500+ per person. Most tours depart from Kahului Heliport (OGG) on the central north shore. Tour Types Compared: Routes & Pricing

Four route options. Pick the row that matches what you most want to see:

Route Price per person Air time What's covered Best for
West Maui scenic $300–$420 ~30 min West Maui Mountains interior, Honokōhau Falls, ʻĪao Valley overhead Budget travelers, families with kids, anyone who wants an aerial taste without committing to an hour.
West Maui & Molokai (60 min) $350–$450 60 min West Maui + Molokai's 3,000+ ft sea cliffs (the world's tallest), Honokōhau Falls, channel crossing Most travelers — the best price-per-experience pick. The Molokai sea cliffs are the standout.
Hāna rainforest / Haleakalā (45 min) $320–$410 45 min Hāna rainforest, East Maui waterfalls, Haleakalā crater terrain Travelers who already drove the Road to Hāna and want the aerial perspective, or anyone prioritizing crater / East Maui scenery. Skips West Maui + Molokai.
Premium route + landing (75–90 min) $500+ 75–90 min Extended Maui + Molokai route with a remote landing, such as Ulupalakua Ranch on Haleakalā's slopes Travelers who want something most operators cannot offer. Single-day Maui itineraries with no time for hikes.
Honest take: The West Maui & Molokai tour is the right pick for most travelers — Honokōhau Falls and the Molokai sea cliffs are the two most spectacular Maui aerial features and they're both included. Choose the Hāna rainforest / Haleakalā route only if East Maui or crater terrain matters more to you. The premium landing tour is worth the price if you want something most operators cannot offer.

Doors-On vs. Doors-Off

Doors-off flights offer unobstructed views and better photography — no glare, no reflections, and uninterrupted angles over the West Maui Mountains and Molokai cliffs. They're also windier, louder, colder, and you'll be strapped in with a four-point harness. Closed-toe shoes are mandatory and most operators don't allow children under 4. Doors-on is more comfortable, warmer, and still provides excellent views — fine for kids, anyone with motion sickness, anyone with a fear of heights, and anyone bringing a regular camera or phone (no risk of dropping it). If photography matters and the rest of your party agrees, go doors-off — pay the $50–$100 premium.

Booking tip: Book Maui helicopter tours 1–2 weeks ahead in peak season (December–March, June–August). Book morning flights — afternoon clouds frequently obscure the West Maui Mountains and reduce visibility into the deep valleys. Tours are weather-dependent and routinely cancelled or rescheduled when conditions over the Molokai channel deteriorate; most operators reschedule for free or refund in full. Wear dark clothing to reduce window reflections (matters more on doors-on flights). Take motion-sickness medication 30–60 minutes before departure if you are prone to it.
