Onekahakaha Beach Park
Onekahakaha is the go-to beach for families in Hilo. A man-made breakwater and natural rock walls create a large, shallow, sandy-bottom pool that stays calm even when the open ocean is churning. For parents with small children, this is the safest ocean swimming on the east side of the Big Island.
The Protected Pool
The main pool is knee- to waist-deep for adults, with a sandy bottom that slopes gently. Kids can splash around without the risk of waves or strong currents. A lifeguard is on duty during regular hours. Outside the protected area, the ocean is rougher and the bottom turns to rock and reef. Stay inside the breakwater unless you are experienced.
The Second Pool
A second, deeper pool sits at the north end of the park. It is less protected and has sea urchins (wana) on the bottom. Watch your step and wear reef shoes if you explore that section. The urchin spines are painful and hard to remove.
Facilities
The park has pavilions, picnic tables, restrooms, showers, and a large parking lot. Everything is free. This is a popular weekend gathering spot for local families, so expect crowds on Saturdays and Sundays. Weekday mornings are much quieter.
Getting There
From downtown Hilo, head east on Kalaniana’ole Avenue along the coast. The park is about two miles from Banyan Drive, on the makai (ocean) side. The drive takes five minutes. Look for the signed entrance and the large parking area.
