Maui Helicopter Tours

A helicopter tour is one of the best ways to see Maui. Large sections of the island — deep valleys, remote waterfalls, the back wall of Haleakala crater — are completely inaccessible by road. A helicopter gets you there in minutes.

What You'll See

Most tours cover the West Maui Mountains, where sheer green cliffs hide dozens of waterfalls visible only from the air. The Wall of Tears, a cliff face with cascading waterfalls after rain, is the highlight for many passengers. Tours also fly over Haleakala crater, the Hana coastline, and Iao Valley.

Doors-Off vs. Doors-On

Doors-off flights offer unobstructed views and better photography — no glare, no reflections. They're windier and louder, and you'll be strapped in with a harness. Doors-on is more comfortable and still provides great views. If photography matters, go doors-off.

Tour Length & Cost

Standard tours run 45-60 minutes and cost $250-$400 per person. Longer tours (up to 75 minutes) that include Molokai's sea cliffs cost more. Book morning flights for calmer air and better visibility — afternoon clouds often obscure the mountains.

Departure Points

Most operators fly from Kahului Heliport near the airport. A few depart from Kapalua on the west side. Kahului departures are more common and usually less expensive.

Booking Tips

Book at least a week ahead during peak season. Request a front seat if the operator allows it (some charge extra). Wear dark clothing to reduce reflections in the windows. Motion sickness is rare but take Dramamine 30 minutes before if you're prone to it.
