Poipu Beach Surf School

Learn to Surf on Kauai's South Shore

Surf Lessons at Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach Surf School operates right on Kauai's south shore at Poipu Beach, one of the most consistent and beginner-friendly surf spots in all of Hawaii. The south shore gets sun roughly 300 days a year and produces small, manageable waves that are ideal for learning.

Their instructors are experienced local surfers who know Poipu's breaks inside and out. Lessons cover everything from ocean safety and wave reading to paddle technique and the pop-up. All equipment is provided — soft-top boards, rash guards, and reef shoes if needed.

Lesson Options

Private lessons give you one-on-one instruction tailored to your ability. Semi-private and group options work well for families or friends traveling together. Kids as young as 5 can take lessons, and the gentle waves at Poipu make it one of the safest spots in Hawaii for young surfers.

Why Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach consistently ranks among Hawaii's top beaches. The south-facing shoreline picks up summer south swells for good surf, while winter brings calm, flat conditions perfect for beginners. The beach has lifeguards, restrooms, and a grassy park — making it easy for non-surfing family members to hang out while you're in the water.

The reef-protected cove on the east side of the beach creates a natural pool with gentle waves that rarely exceed two feet — the perfect training ground. Once you graduate from the cove, the outside reef break offers longer rides for intermediate surfers.

Getting There

Poipu Beach is located on Kauai's sunny south shore, about 25 minutes from Lihue Airport. The beach has a parking lot that fills early, so plan to arrive before 9 AM or park along the road. The surf school meets directly at the beach.
