This is one of a few beaches in Hilo, Onekahakaha Beach Park is a favorite of local families because of the small, sand bottomed ocean pool which allows for safe swimming for the kids. There is a second pond near the north part of the beach, but is not protected from the ocean and has a lot of prickly residents - sea urchins. So, steer clear.
There is white sand here, picnic tables, restrooms and a lifeguard. Since it is so popular with the locals, it might be best to visit during the weekdays. To get to Onekahakaha take King Kamehameha Road past Banyan Drive to Kanoelehua Street. Continue on Kalaniana'ole Street, approximately 4 miles along coast. Turn makai (towards the beach). Park, then follow parking lot to the right.
