Where to Rent a Surfboard on Maui

Maui has rental shops in every major tourist zone. Kihei, Lahaina, and Pa'ia all have multiple outfitters within walking distance of the beach. Expect to pay $20-40 per day for a longboard and $25-50 for a shortboard, depending on the shop and the quality of the board. Multi-day rentals drop the daily rate significantly -- a week-long rental often costs about the same as three single days.

If you're a beginner, grab a soft-top longboard. They're forgiving on wipeouts, stable enough to actually stand on, and available at nearly every shop. Most rental places will also set you up with a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen if you need it.

Best Beginner Surf Spots

The Cove at Kalama Park in Kihei is the go-to learner wave on Maui. Small, consistent, and right next to the road. You can literally park, walk 30 seconds, and be in the water. Lahaina Breakwall is another reliable beginner spot on the west side -- mellow rollers that break over a sandy bottom. DT Fleming Beach in Kapalua also works on smaller days, though it can get more powerful in winter swells.

South shore breaks (Kihei, Wailea) tend to fire in summer months when south swells push in. Winter shifts the action to the north and west shores.

For Experienced Surfers

Ho'okipa Beach near Pa'ia is Maui's marquee wave. It's a reef break with fast, powerful faces and a local crew that knows the lineup. This is not a place to paddle out on your first day. Honolua Bay on the northwest coast is a world-class right-hand point break that lights up during winter north swells. Both spots demand experience, proper equipment, and respect for the locals in the water.

Lesson and Rental Packages

First-timers should consider a surf lesson that includes the rental. Most surf schools on Maui run 90-minute to two-hour group sessions priced between $80 and $150 per person. You'll get a board, instruction, and time in the water with a guide who knows the break. Schools operate daily out of Kihei, Lahaina, and Ka'anapali. After the lesson, many shops will let you keep the board for the rest of the day at no extra charge.
