Royal Lahaina Resort Overview
Royal Lahaina Resort sits on Ka'anapali Beach North, one of Maui's best stretches of sand. The property covers 27 acres and has been a Ka'anapali fixture since 1962 -- one of the first resorts built on this coast.
It is not the newest resort on the strip. It is not the most luxurious. But the beachfront location is hard to beat at this price point. You walk out of your room, cross a lawn, and you are on the sand. No shuttle, no elevator gauntlet, no five-minute trek through a lobby.
The grounds include two pools, tennis courts, the Myths of Maui luau, and a short walk to Whalers Village for shopping and restaurants. The Ka'anapali Beach Walk connects you to the Sheraton, Hyatt, and Westin properties to the south.
Rooms & Suites
Three main room categories here. Hotel rooms in the 12-story tower come in ocean view, partial ocean view, and garden view configurations. Cottage rooms sit in low-rise buildings closer to the beach. Ocean-front suites occupy the premium spots.
The cottages are the move. They feel more private, more Hawaiian -- you step outside and you are practically on the grass with the ocean in front of you. The tower rooms have better views from higher floors but feel more like a standard hotel.
Rooms were renovated but still carry an older resort feel compared to the Hyatt or Westin next door. If you need a brand-new bathroom with rain showers and USB outlets everywhere, this is not your place. If you want a solid room on a world-class beach without spending $600/night, it works.
Rough pricing: $200-$400/night for tower rooms, $300-$500 for cottages, $500+ for suites depending on season. Rates drop significantly in shoulder season (April-May, September-October).
Myths of Maui Luau
The on-site Myths of Maui Luau is one of the more affordable options on the island. It runs several nights per week on the resort's ocean-front grounds -- right on the grass overlooking the water.
The package includes a buffet dinner, open bar, and a Polynesian show with fire-knife dancing. Tickets run about $130-$150 per adult. Kids are cheaper. It is open to non-guests, so you do not need to stay at the resort to attend.
It is not the Old Lahaina Luau. The food and production are a tier below. But for the price and the ocean-front setting, it is solid -- especially if you are already staying on property and want to skip driving somewhere else.
Beach & Pools
This is the real selling point. Ka'anapali Beach North is less crowded than the main Ka'anapali Beach stretch near Black Rock. The sand is wide, the water is clear, and there is good snorkeling on the north end toward Honokowai.
Two pools on property: the main pool near the tower and a quieter pool by the cottages. Neither has waterslides or resort-style water features. If you want a pool complex, the Hyatt next door has one of the best in Hawaii. Royal Lahaina's pools are simple -- lounge chairs, a hot tub, and a pool bar.
For families with kids who want to spend most of their time on the actual beach rather than a manufactured pool experience, this setup is fine.
How It Compares to Other Ka'anapali Resorts
vs. Hyatt Regency (next door): The Hyatt is newer, has the famous penguin habitat, waterslides, and better restaurants. It also costs $100-$200 more per night. If your budget allows it, the Hyatt is a better overall resort. But Royal Lahaina's beach access is just as good.
vs. Sheraton / Westin: More polished properties with higher-end finishes, better on-site dining, and full spa facilities. Higher rates across the board. These are the places where the rooms themselves feel like the destination.
vs. Aston Ka'anapali Shores: Similar price range with condo-style rooms (full kitchens, more space). No luau, no resort programming. Better for longer stays where you want to cook.
Royal Lahaina's edge: beachfront location and an on-site luau at a lower nightly rate than its neighbors. You are trading room quality for location value.
Tips for Your Stay
Book an ocean-view tower room and request a high floor. The sunsets from floors 8-12 are worth the upcharge over garden view. Cottages are better for families with young kids who need ground-floor access and do not care about the view from inside the room.
Self-parking runs about $25/day, which is standard for Ka'anapali. You will want a car to explore beyond the resort strip -- the Road to Hana, Haleakala, and upcountry Maui are all worth day trips. Book through Discount Hawaii Car Rental for the best rates.
Bring reef-safe sunscreen. It is required by Hawaii state law, and the snorkeling right off the beach makes it matter here more than most places.
If the Myths of Maui luau is on your list, book it for your first or second night. Availability fills up, and you do not want to miss it because you waited too long.
