Kauai 4-Day Itinerary

Four days on Kauai hits all the major zones — the west side canyon, the south shore beaches, the Na Pali Coast from the water or air, and the lush north shore. The island is small enough that no drive takes more than an hour, which means less windshield time and more doing.

A rental car is essential on Kauai. There's one main highway and no public transit worth relying on.

1 Day 1 - Waimea Canyon & West Side

Waimea Canyon runs 14 miles long, a mile wide, and over 3,500 feet deep. Start early — clouds fill the canyon by midday and you want clear skies for those overlooks. Drive up to the top, then catch sunset at Kekaha Beach on the way down.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Waimea Canyon Overlook — Your first jaw-drop moment. Red and green layers stretching to the horizon.
  2. 2 Pu'u Hinahina Lookout — A short drive further up with views of Waipo'o Falls cascading 800 feet down the canyon wall.
  3. 3 Kalalau Lookout — The crown jewel. At 4,000 feet you're staring straight down into Kalalau Valley and out to the ocean.
  4. 4 Pu'u o Kila Lookout — The road's end. Slightly different angle on the coastline and the trailhead for Pihea Trail.
  5. 5 Kekaha Beach — Long, uncrowded west-side beach. Perfect spot to watch the sun set over Ni'ihau.

2 Day 2 - South Shore

The south shore is Kauai's sunniest coast. Poipu Beach is the main draw — lifeguards, sea turtles, and monk seals show up regularly. Spouting Horn is a quick stop worth making, and the National Tropical Botanical Garden is one of the best in the country.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Spouting Horn — An ocean geyser that shoots water through a lava tube. Free parking, quick stop. The hissing sound is caused by air being compressed in a second tube.
  2. 2 National Tropical Botanical Garden — 252 acres of tropical plants in the Lawai Valley. Guided tours run daily. The Allerton Garden tour is the standout.
  3. 3 Poipu Beach — The best all-around south shore beach. Lifeguards, good snorkeling, sea turtles on the sand. The tombolo (sand bar) splits it into two bays.
  4. 4 Shipwreck Beach (Keoneloa Bay) — Dramatic cliffs, strong current (not for casual swimming), but a great walk. The Mahaulepu Heritage Trail starts here.

3 Day 3 - Na Pali Coast Tour

Day three is your chance to see the part of Kauai no road can reach. The Na Pali Coast is 17 miles of sheer cliffs, hanging valleys, and waterfalls plunging directly into the ocean. A boat tour from Port Allen or a helicopter flight are the two best ways to experience it. Book well in advance — both sell out.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Port Allen — Most Na Pali boat tours depart from this small harbor on the south shore. Arrive 30 minutes early. Catamaran and raft tours are both solid options. Morning departures tend to have calmer seas.
  2. 2 Na Pali Coast — 17 miles of 4,000-foot cliffs, sea caves, and waterfalls. If you go the helicopter route, request a doors-off flight for the best photos.

4 Day 4 - North Shore

The north shore is Kauai at its most lush. One-lane bridges, taro fields backed by jagged peaks, and beaches that feel like the end of the world. Start at Kilauea Lighthouse, work west through Hanalei, and end at Tunnels Beach for afternoon snorkeling.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Kilauea Lighthouse — The northernmost point of the main Hawaiian islands. The lighthouse sits inside a wildlife refuge full of nesting seabirds — red-footed boobies, frigatebirds, and nene.
  2. 2 Hanalei Valley Lookout — Pull over for the iconic view of taro fields in the valley below, backed by waterfall-streaked mountains.
  3. 3 Hanalei Bay — A two-mile crescent of sand with mountain views in every direction. Walk the town for lunch, shave ice, and local shops.
  4. 4 Tunnels Beach — World-class snorkeling with a massive reef system close to shore. Calm in summer; winter swells turn it into a surf break.
  5. 5 Ke'e Beach — The end of the road. A small, protected lagoon backed by the Na Pali cliffs. The Kalalau Trail starts here.

Four days covers Kauai's highlights. For a shorter trip, check our two or three-day itineraries. More time? Our five and seven-day itineraries add the east side, river kayaking, and hidden gems.
