2 Day Kauai Itinerary
Two Days on the Garden Isle of Kauai

Explore Kauai in 2 Days
Two days on Kauai demands focus. You can't do everything, so don't try. The two regions that deliver the most per hour of driving are the west side — specifically Waimea Canyon — and the north shore. Those are your two days. A rental car is non-negotiable; there's no practical alternative for covering this much ground.
If you have a third day, read our 3-day Kauai itinerary. If you have more time, see our 5-day or 7-day versions.
Day #1 - Waimea Canyon & West Side
Waimea Canyon runs 14 miles long and over 3,500 feet deep. Start early — clouds fill the canyon by midday, and the overlooks at the top need clear skies to pay off. Drive up through the lookouts, then catch sunset at Kekaha Beach on the way back down.
The road climbs from sea level to over 4,000 feet. Give yourself the full morning and early afternoon. Pack water and snacks — there's nothing to buy up top.
Stops for the Day
- 1 Waimea Canyon Overlook — Your first jaw-drop. Red and green layers stretch to the horizon. The main lookout is the classic angle most photos are taken from.
- 2 Pu'u Hinahina Lookout — A short drive further up. On clear days you get a view of Waipo'o Falls dropping down the canyon wall.
- 3 Kalalau Lookout — The crown jewel at 4,000 feet. You're staring straight down into Kalalau Valley with the ocean at the far end. Get here before the clouds roll in.
- 4 Pu'u o Kila Lookout — The road's end, a slightly different angle on the same coastline. Trailhead for the Pihea Trail if you want to stretch your legs before heading back down.
- 5 Kekaha Beach — Long, uncrowded west-side beach. Catch the sunset over Ni'ihau here on your way back down.
Day #2 - North Shore
The north shore is Kauai at its most lush. One-lane bridges, taro fields, jagged peaks. Start at Kilauea Lighthouse on the island's northernmost point, then work west through Hanalei and out to Tunnels Beach for the afternoon.
The road narrows as you head west past Hanalei. Give yourself extra time — traffic through the one-lane bridges can stack up, especially on weekends.
Stops for the Day
- 1 Kilauea Lighthouse — The northernmost point of the main Hawaiian islands. Inside the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, nesting seabirds are everywhere — red-footed boobies, nēnē, and frigatebirds.
- 2 Hanalei Valley Lookout — Roadside pull-off with the iconic view of taro fields below, waterfall-streaked mountains behind. Quick stop, worth every second.
- 3 Hanalei Bay — Two-mile crescent of sand with mountain views in every direction. Good lunch options in town. Walk the beach before heading further west.
- 4 Tunnels Beach — World-class snorkeling over a massive reef system close to shore. Bring your own gear or rent in Hanalei. Summer conditions are ideal; winter swells turn it into a surf break.
