Big Island 2-Day Itinerary

Two days on the Big Island means picking the two essentials: beaches on the Kona side and the volcano on the Hilo side. The island is massive — 4,028 square miles, bigger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined — so you'll be driving. But these two days hit the highlights that make this island unlike anywhere else on earth.

A rental car is non-negotiable on the Big Island. Public transit is limited and distances are long.

1 Day 1 - Kona Coast & Kohala

The Kona side is dry, sunny, and built for beach days. Start in Kailua-Kona town for breakfast and a stroll along Ali'i Drive, then drive north along the coast to some of the best beaches in the state. The water at Kua Bay is turquoise and the sand at Hapuna is consistently rated among the top beaches in Hawaii.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Kailua-Kona Town — Waterfront shops along Ali'i Drive, good coffee spots, and the Hulihe'e Palace. Walk the seawall for a quick orientation.
  2. 2 Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park — Sea turtles rest on the beach here regularly. Ancient Hawaiian fishponds and petroglyphs along the trail. Free admission.
  3. 3 Kua Bay (Manini'owali) — White sand, turquoise water, no development in sight. Can be rough in winter — check conditions before swimming.
  4. 4 Hapuna Beach — Half a mile of white sand, consistently rated one of the best beaches in the state. Lifeguards on duty, facilities on-site.

2 Day 2 - Volcanoes National Park

The drive from Kona to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park takes about 2.5 hours. Start early and plan to spend the full day. Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes on earth, and the park has enough trails and overlooks to fill a week. Check the NPS website for current eruption status before you go.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Kilauea Visitor Center — Start here for orientation, ranger talks, and current eruption updates. The steam vents are a short walk away.
  2. 2 Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube) — Walk through a 500-year-old lava tube surrounded by tree ferns. Lit and paved, about 20 minutes round trip.
  3. 3 Devastation Trail — A 1-mile paved walk through a cinder field created by the 1959 Kilauea Iki eruption. Eerie and photogenic.
  4. 4 Chain of Craters Road — A 19-mile drive from the crater rim down to the coast, with multiple overlooks of old lava flows and the ocean.

Two days covers the Big Island's two biggest draws — Kona beaches and the volcano. If you have more time, our three, five, seven, and ten-day itineraries add Hilo waterfalls, South Kona coffee country, the Hamakua Coast, and Mauna Kea.
