Kauai 6-Day Itinerary

Six days is the ideal amount of time for Kauai. The island is only 25 miles across, but the terrain is so varied — canyon, coast, rainforest, river — that each day feels like a different trip. This itinerary covers every side of the island, from the sunny south shore to the remote east side that most visitors skip.

A rental car is essential on Kauai.

1 Day 1 - South Shore

Start on the sunny south shore. Poipu Beach is the best all-around beach on this coast — lifeguards, good snorkeling, sea turtles regularly hauling out on the sand. Spouting Horn and the botanical garden round out the day.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Spouting Horn — Ocean geyser shooting through a lava tube. Free parking, quick stop.
  2. 2 National Tropical Botanical Garden — 252 acres in the Lawai Valley. The Allerton Garden guided tour is the highlight.
  3. 3 Poipu Beach — Best south shore beach. Lifeguards, snorkeling, sea turtles. The tombolo splits it into two bays.
  4. 4 Shipwreck Beach — Dramatic cliffs and the start of the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. Not for swimming but great for a walk.

2 Day 2 - Waimea Canyon & West Side

Waimea Canyon runs 14 miles long and over 3,500 feet deep. Start early — clouds fill the canyon by midday. Drive to the top for the Na Pali overlooks, then catch sunset at Kekaha Beach on the way down.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Waimea Canyon Overlook — Red and green layers stretching to the horizon. Your first jaw-drop moment.
  2. 2 Pu'u Hinahina Lookout — Views of Waipo'o Falls cascading 800 feet down the canyon wall.
  3. 3 Kalalau Lookout — At 4,000 feet, staring straight down into Kalalau Valley and out to the Pacific.
  4. 4 Pu'u o Kila Lookout — Road's end. Pihea Trail trailhead if you want to stretch your legs.
  5. 5 Kekaha Beach — Uncrowded west-side sunset over Ni'ihau.

3 Day 3 - Na Pali Coast Tour

The Na Pali Coast is 17 miles of sheer cliffs, hanging valleys, and waterfalls no road can reach. Boat tour from Port Allen or helicopter flight — book well in advance. Morning boats have calmer seas.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Port Allen — Most boat tours depart here. Arrive 30 minutes early. Catamaran and raft options available.
  2. 2 Na Pali Coast — 4,000-foot cliffs, sea caves, and waterfalls from the water or air. Helicopter riders should request doors-off for the best shots.

4 Day 4 - North Shore

The north shore is Kauai at its greenest. One-lane bridges, taro fields, jagged peaks. Start at Kilauea Lighthouse, work west to Tunnels Beach, and end at Ke'e Beach where the road stops and the Kalalau Trail begins.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Kilauea Lighthouse — Northernmost point of the main Hawaiian islands. Wildlife refuge with nesting seabirds.
  2. 2 Hanalei Valley Lookout — Iconic view of taro fields backed by waterfall-streaked mountains.
  3. 3 Hanalei Bay — Two-mile crescent of sand, mountain views everywhere. Good lunch spot.
  4. 4 Tunnels Beach — World-class snorkeling with massive reef system. Calm in summer, surf break in winter.
  5. 5 Ke'e Beach — End of the road. Protected lagoon backed by Na Pali cliffs. Kalalau Trail trailhead.

5 Day 5 - East Side & River

The east side is where Kauai's rivers and waterfalls are. Wailua Falls is the 80-foot twin cascade you've seen in photos. The Wailua River is the only navigable river in Hawaii — kayak it to reach Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls), a 100-foot waterfall hidden in the jungle.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Wailua Falls — An 80-foot twin cascade viewable from the road. The parking lot overlook is the classic angle. Go in the morning for the best light.
  2. 2 Opaeka'a Falls — Another roadside waterfall on the way to the river. Pull over at the lookout for a clear view of the falls and the Wailua River valley below.
  3. 3 Wailua River — Kayak to Secret Falls (Uluwehi Falls). Guided tours or rentals available. The paddle takes about 45 minutes each way, plus a 30-minute hike to the falls.
  4. 4 Lydgate Beach — A family-friendly beach with two rock-walled ocean pools that create calm, protected swimming areas. Good for kids and beginners.

6 Day 6 - Hidden Gems & Coconut Coast

Your last day is for the spots most visitors miss. The Sleeping Giant trail gives you 360-degree views from the summit ridge. Kapa'a town has the best concentration of local shops and restaurants on the east side. Anahola Beach is where locals go when they want to avoid tourists.

Stops for the Day

  1. 1 Sleeping Giant Trail (Nounou Mountain) — A moderate hike with 360-degree views from the summit ridge. About 3.5 miles round trip. The east side trailhead is the most popular.
  2. 2 Kapa'a Town — The east side's main town. Local shops, restaurants, and the coastal bike path. Good spot for acai bowls, poke, and shave ice.
  3. 3 Anahola Beach — A locals' beach with calm water and few visitors. The mountain backdrop is dramatic and the vibe is mellow.
  4. 4 Kilauea Town — A small north shore town with a farmers market (Thursdays), the Kilauea Fish Market, and Banana Joe's fruit stand.
