Kekaha is the first portion of the 15-mile long stretch of beach in West Kauai called Polihale Beach. The sand here is comfortable but the water is raucous. Never go in unless it looks very calm. It is a nice spot for experienced surfers and wind surfers. Only occasionally is there a lifeguard on duty. Restrooms are available.
To reach Kekaha take Highway 50 west from Waimea. The turn off for Kekaha Beach Park is located between mile markers 26 and 27.

Kekaha Beach

Kekaha Beach is where Kauai's west side starts to feel like a different island altogether. Hot, dry, and wide open. The sand stretches for what seems like forever, running nearly 15 miles toward Polihale State Park at the end of the road.

The Beach

This is a long, straight ribbon of white sand backed by low dunes. There is no reef protection, so the waves hit the shore directly. On calm days the swimming is decent, but shore break can come up fast and catch you off guard. Pay attention to how the water looks before going in.

The west side gets less rain than anywhere else on Kauai. Expect sun and heat. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen because shade is scarce along the beach itself.

Crowds and Vibe

Kekaha is a locals' beach. You will not find tour buses here. On weekends, families set up camp with coolers and fishing poles. Weekdays can be near-empty. If you want a long, quiet walk on the sand with nobody around, this is your spot.

Sunsets

The west-facing shoreline gives you unobstructed sunset views over open ocean. On clear evenings the sky turns shades of orange and purple that are hard to find anywhere else on the island. Bring a chair.

Getting There

Take Highway 50 west from Waimea. The turnoff for Kekaha Beach Park is between mile markers 26 and 27. Parking is along the road or in the small beach park lot. Restrooms are available at the park. A lifeguard is only occasionally on duty. If you are heading to Polihale, Kekaha is the last stretch of paved road before the dirt track begins.
