One Ranch, Two Very Different Tours

If you want to drive yourself off-road on Kauai, there's really only one game in town — and it happens to be one of the best ATV experiences in the state. Kipu Ranch Adventures runs guided 4x4 UTV tours across a 3,000-acre working cattle ranch in Lihue, tucked between the Huleia River and the jagged Haupu mountain range. The ranch has been in operation since 1872, and more importantly for Hollywood, it's the location where Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Descendants, and Outbreak were all filmed.

Kipu offers two main tours. Pick the right one and you're getting the best off-road experience in Hawaii. Pick wrong and you'll wish you'd gone to the waterfall. Here's how to choose.

You'll want a rental car

Kipu Ranch is about 10 minutes from Lihue Airport, 25 minutes from Poipu, and 45 minutes from Princeville. No shuttle is offered, so you'll need your own ride. We use Discount Hawaii Car Rental for no-deposit, free-cancellation bookings.

1. Ultimate Ranch Tour (3 Hours) — The Classic

The signature tour and the one most first-time visitors should book. Over about three hours you'll drive the Teryx 4-seater UTVs through lush pastures, descend into the Huleia Valley under a full rainforest canopy, and climb back out to a viewpoint below the Haupu mountain range. The guide stops at the main filming locations — the meadow where the Jurassic Park gallimimus stampede was shot, the valley from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and spots from The Descendants and Outbreak.

  • Duration: ~3 hours
  • Prices: $211.90 per adult (passenger or shared driver on a Teryx), $142.64 per youth ages 9–17, $420.80 for solo driver on a Teryx — Hawaii sales tax included (per Kipu Ranch FAQ)
  • Minimum age: 9 years old; anyone under 18 must be with an adult
  • Best for: Families with kids 9+, film fans, first-time visitors who want the full ranch story

2. Waterfall Trail Expedition — The Wet One

This is Kipu's longer, more technical ride. The Waterfall Trail Expedition covers all three trail systems on the ranch, crosses multiple streams, pushes through bamboo jungles, and finishes at a private waterfall with an extended stop. You can view the falls from above or take a short (optional) hike down to the base and swim. If you're on Kauai specifically for the adventure — and you're comfortable driving a UTV through water crossings — this is the one to book.

  • Duration: longer than the Ultimate Ranch Tour (roughly 4 hours with the waterfall stop)
  • Minimum age: 9 years old
  • What to expect: stream crossings, muddy sections, bamboo forest, private waterfall stop with optional swim
  • Best for: Repeat visitors, couples, anyone who wants a destination at the end of the ride

Which One Should You Book?

First-time visitors, film fans
Ultimate Ranch Tour. Covers all the headline locations in one go.
Repeat visitors / adventure travelers
Waterfall Trail Expedition. More trails, stream crossings, and a swim at the end.
Families with kids 9–14
Ultimate Ranch Tour. Youth passenger rate is about a third off.
Solo traveler, want your own rig
→ Book the solo driver Teryx rate. Higher price, but you're not crammed in a 4-seater with strangers.

What to Know Before You Go

  • You don't need a Class 4 license or anything exotic — a standard driver's license is fine to drive the UTVs. Drivers must be 18+.
  • The minimum age for passengers is 9. Kids under 9 cannot ride, period. This is non-negotiable and it's the #1 thing that gets families turned away at check-in.
  • You will get dirty. Red dirt is Kauai's signature souvenir and it stains permanently — wear clothes and shoes you don't care about. Pack a change for after. A small dry bag is useful for your clean clothes and phone.
  • Closed-toe shoes required. Sneakers, trail runners, or water shoes — no flip-flops, no sandals, no Crocs.
  • For the waterfall tour, bring a swimsuit under your clothes and a quick-dry towel. The optional waterfall swim is the highlight.
  • Book well ahead. Kipu Ranch is the only commercial ATV tour on Kauai and it regularly sells out 5–7 days in advance in peak season (summer, Christmas, spring break). Book before you land.
  • No shuttle service. You must have your own transportation to the ranch — plan accordingly if you're staying on the North Shore.
