One of several falls along the path of the Wailuku River in Hilo, Rainbow Falls is a gorgeous waterfall to visit early in the morning. Its name originated from the fact that on some early mornings a rainbow can be seen arching across the falls. Waianuenue Falls is its Hawaiian name which means "rainbow seen in water." Like all waterfalls, Rainbow Falls' display is dependent on recent rainfall.

It can vacillate between a single thin stream of water and a raging cascade. When the flow is just right, the falls resemble an 80 foot white shower falling over a rock shelf into a placid blue-green pool. From the lookout the surrounding vegetation is a dense jungle. A path to the left of the lookout provides a view from the top of Rainbow Falls. Since this is such a popular tourist spot, it unfortunately is also a thief's favorite hangout. Do not leave any valuables in your car and be sure to lock it. Restrooms are provided. Take Waianuenue Ave. from downtown Hilo mauka for approximately two miles. Rainbow Drive branches off to the right just after crossing a bridge. Follow the signs to the parking lot. The park opens at sunrise. and closes at dusk.

How Guidereview Works

Guidereview Travel Reviews

Creating our proprietary Guidereview is a multifaceted process. We carefully curate a selection of reviews from the travel industry's most respected tourism experts. We then assign independent grades to the reviews, and apply a weighted average to encapsulate the range of opinions found on each service. The end result is a single grade that captures the essence of our evaluation in one Guidereview. Each activity, tour, and accommodation available for booking on Guide of Hawaii only receives a Guidereview when we've aggregated at least three critical travel sources.

Why "weighted average" is important

Guidereview is a weighted average in that we assign more importance, or weight, to some sources and travel publications than others, based on their quality and overall stature. In addition, for tours and activities, we also normalize the resulting grades (akin to "grading on a curve" in schools), which ensures our final grades don't cluster together.

Interpreting Guidereview

Each unique Guidereview can range from A-F, with higher letters indicating better overall reviews. To help visitors instantly compare, we also provide a summary of our findings, alongside an aggregation date, that shows three of our most trusted online travel review sources: Tripadvisor, Yelp, and Google.
