Kauai is one of the most family friendly places in the world.   It is common to see older children caring for younger ones in a loving manner – even those they have just met and have decided teach them how to do something new.  ‘Ohana is the word we use to describe extended family; it is a concept meaning that we all watch out for each other.  In keeping with this tradition, it is common for a youngster to address an adult as uncle or auntie; even if they have just met; a reminder that it is everyone’s responsibility to malama (care for) the keiki (children).
