The Beet Box Café is a hip little place situated in the back of Celestial Natural Foods in Hale’iwa, Oahu. It’s kind of tucked away and a little hard to find if you didn’t know it was there, but it is worth a visit. Specializing in vegan / vegetarian and organic food, they do their best to source produce locally. The best thing about the Beet Box is that the food is definitely fresh and alive. They proudly claim that they ‘serve the healthiest food on North Shore with love and intention’.
It is a sweet little café, with an extensive list of exotic-sounding smoothies with names like ‘avalanche’ and ‘alligators’, made with fresh tropical fruits – banana, pineapple, papaya and a variety of other sumptuous ingredients. We ordered the Acai Smoothie and the Lassi. As I sipped the lassi an explosion of cardamom hit my tastebuds. It was a little strong but definitely unique. The Acai smoothie was yummy and fresh.
The signature Beet Box Salad was really delicious, with local greens, red onion, cucumber, beets (of course!), carrots, avocado, walnuts, sunflower seeds and sunflower sprouts, and served with a Lilikoi vinaigrette. The special dressing was amazing – tangy and a little sweet with just the right amount of zing. The salad was a very large serving and great value for $10. I ordered the Raw’r crackers to accompany the salad – crackers made entirely of raw ingredients, and they were really good. Apparently people come from miles away for the ‘healthy plate’ which is a large plate of stir-fried veges and greens. The Lilikoi Cheesecake looked incredible but after filling up on smoothies we unfortunately had no more room in our bellies to try it!
The folks at Beet Box are friendly and the service is fast – our meal arrived within 5-10 minutes. The vibe is local and funky. There are only a couple of tables and the place feels a little cramped and I would recommend getting take out and heading down to the local beach to enjoy the food in the fresh air.
This café appeals to the healthy eater who might be interested in organic, GMO free, and local produce. As a true carnivore, I have respect for cooks who can do vegetarian food well. Our Beet Box meal certainly left me feeling satisfied and well-nourished and surprisingly not wondering where the meat was. The owners say their ‘secret ingredient is love’ and I think they might be right!
The Beet Box folks also operate a food truck ‘Lunch Wagon’ located at Waihuena Farms near the famous Bonzai Pipeline, which is open Saturday – Wednesday 11-5 weather permitting.
The café is open daily 9-5 and Sunday 9-4 Phone: (808) 637-3000
