Paia Things to Do
Things to Do near Paia on Maui
Paia is a small North Shore town with a big role in Maui trip planning. It is a natural stop for beach time, food, surf-watching, and last-minute supplies before continuing onto the Road to Hana.
The town center is compact and busy, so park once when you can and explore on foot. For beaches and lookouts, build in time for changing wind, surf, and traffic along Hana Highway.

1. Paia Town
Start with Paia's compact town center for boutiques, galleries, cafes, and casual food. It is lively without being large, so it works well as a short stop before or after beach time.
2. H.A. Baldwin Beach Park
H.A. Baldwin Beach Park sits just west of town and offers a long sandy shoreline, park facilities, and a classic North Shore setting. Check wind and surf before swimming, since conditions can change quickly.
3. Hookipa Beach Park
Hookipa Beach Park is one of Maui's best-known windsurfing and surf-watching spots. Many visitors stop at the overlook for the view rather than getting in the water.
4. Road to Hana Starting Point
Paia is the last major town before the Hana Highway becomes a full day of curves, bridges, waterfalls, and rainforest stops. Fill the tank, pick up snacks, and start early if Hana is your main plan.
5. North Shore Food and Coffee
Paia's food scene is part of the draw, from coffee and casual breakfast to fish, flatbread, and sit-down dinners. If you are driving farther east, eat before you leave town or bring food with you. For a reserved experience elsewhere on the island, compare the farm lunches, cacao tastings, pineapple visits, wine pairings, and brewery options in our Maui food tours guide.
How to Plan Your Time in Paia
Allow: 2–4 hours, or a half day with Baldwin and Hookipa. Best for: North Shore beaches, food, shops, and the start or finish of a Hana drive.
Choose a different plan if: You need an early Road to Hana departure; save the town walk for the return or another day.
Hawaii Guide's recommended order
- H.A. Baldwin Beach: Start at the coast if the day's conditions are inviting.
- Paia town: Park once for food and shops rather than circling the compact center.
- Hookipa Beach Park: Use the overlook and stay clear of water beyond your experience level.
Planning tip: Paia traffic and parking can slow a Hana departure; do not bury a long town stop inside an already ambitious drive.
