Sharks belong in Hawaiian waters, and shark bites are rare. That is useful perspective for a first ocean swim. It is not a promise about the beach in front of you.
Our recommendation is to make the beach decision before the shark decision: choose a lifeguarded beach, ask about conditions, and follow posted warnings. Hawaii Ocean Safety also asks visitors to know their limits and swim with a buddy. Currents, shore break, and your swimming ability matter alongside wildlife.
Use our Hawaii ocean report to plan, then check with the lifeguard when you arrive. A favorable forecast does not overrule a warning sign, a closure, or the conditions you find there. If you are unsure, stay out.
