August may signal that the end of summer is on the horizon, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the fun will be winding down in Maui. There will still be plenty to do and see during an August visit. The island’s calendar currently boasts of iconic hula festivals, intriguing fundraisers, and unique musical events - and you can expect food, drink, and good vibes to be involved in virtually all of it.

2023 Events and Festivities

Emma Farden Sharpe Hula Festival

Emma Farden Sharpe was, and still is, a legend in hula. This special celebration in her honor takes place this year at the beautiful Maui Westin Resort & Spa in Lahaina. In addition to a hula workshop, there will be free activities for kids and Maui-made artists. This will be one of the month's visually beautiful and culturally significant events. Visitors of all ages will find something to marvel at here.

When: Wednesday, August 23rd, 9 AM - 5 PM
Where: 2365 Kaanapali Parkway, Lahaina (Maui Westin Resort & Spa)
More Info: Emma Farden Sharpe Hula Festival Facebook

8th Annual Sophie Swim

Sophie Deloria was a girl tragically killed by a rockslide back in 2011. Following her passing, a local fundraising event in her honor was organized, and it happens again on Maui in August 2023, marking its 8th annual iteration. The swim race has previously seen well over 100 swimmers and takes place in beautiful Kahekili Beach. It’s great exercise and beautiful outdoor fun for a good cause.

When: Sunday, August 27th, 6:45 PM - 11 AM
Where: 20 Ka Ala Dr, Lahaina (Kahekili Beach Park)
More Info: Sophie Deloria

Silent Disco at Down the Hatch

Yet another musical event, but of a wildly different flavor, will be the silent disco at Down the Hatch. Down the Hatch is a seafood restaurant, but on this fateful night, a crowd of dancers will move to their own personal tunes in silence. Hawaii is an unusual place, and silent discos are something you won’t experience every day. This is a stellar choice for travelers looking to try something new and intriguing.

When: Thursday, August 17th, 10 PM - 11:55 PM
Where: 658 Front St, Lahaina (Down the Hatch, Breakwall Shave Ice)
More Info: Silent Disco at Down the Hatch

Aloha Maui Pride Flatbread Pizza Fundraiser & Silent Auction

August starts with a fundraiser and silent auction at The Flatbread Company in Paia. Every pizza bought will raise money for the organization, and you may buy more than one because The Flatbread Company is arguably some of the best pizza in Hawaii.

When: Tuesday, August 1st, 5 PM - 9 PM
Where: 89 Hana Hwy, Paia
More Info: Aloha Maui Pride Facebook

Fresh wood-fired pizza, silent discos, fundraisers, and summer sun - you won’t miss out if you catch this year’s Maui summer toward its tail end. We hope you find this a helpful starting place for planning your August in Maui. As always, mahalo, and best wishes for your visit!
