The Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority's September 23 visitor update says most accommodations, restaurants, shops, tours, and activities have reopened and are welcoming visitors. That is good news for businesses whose employees depend on guests returning. It is not a blanket reopening of the island's parks, trails, or damaged communities.
That welcome matters to people whose work depends on visitors. In Hawaii News Now's September 16 interviews, owners of Kauaʻi Fresh Fish, Java Kai, and The Musubi Truck described major losses in sales or staffing after Lowell. A September 18 Associated Press report carried by Hawaiʻi Public Radio described some small businesses asking visitors to return with patience. These are accounts from individual operators during the first weeks of recovery, not a current islandwide visitor total.
DBEDT's published monthly visitor statistics currently end in July, before the storm. They cannot establish September visitor totals or hotel occupancy.
