Rappel Maui's FAQ defines canyoning as traveling through a canyon using techniques such as hiking, swimming and rappelling. Rappelling is descending a rock face or waterfall with a rope, harness and braking system; abseiling is another name for it. Maui's operator describes its tour as a canyoning experience, so do not assume the two terms identify separate products.

The same FAQ lists three descents: a dry practice rappel and two waterfall rappels, conditions permitting. Da Life Outdoors describes a safety lesson and dry-wall practice before guests hike to 30-foot Bamboo Falls and 60-foot Papakolea Falls on its private property. Read the itinerary for the product you are booking rather than expecting the two courses to be identical.

Maui says no previous climbing or rappelling experience is required. That does not mean no exertion or no risk. Being willing to listen, follow instructions and handle the hike matters as much as being willing to step over an edge.

The Classic Group Tour lists about three hours at the activity site, Monday through Saturday, by reservation. Guests meet at the Garden of Eden Arboretum, 10-600 Hana Highway. The FAQ places the course in Puohokamoa Valley and estimates about an hour from Kahului. Treat that as the operator's estimate, not a guaranteed arrival time.

Maui's FAQ says the hike back climbs about 300 vertical feet after the descents. Include that uphill finish when deciding whether the activity fits your group. The operator does not provide transportation and says taxis and rideshares do not service its remote location; arrange your own transport before paying.

Our recommendation is to keep the rest of this day light. Use the Road to Hana guide to understand the drive, then choose a few Hana stops that fit the confirmed session and daylight. Avoid making a full Hana itinerary and a timed rappel compete for the same day. A central or north-shore base may be worth comparing if this is your anchor activity; judge it against the rest of your stay, not only one morning.

Da Life Outdoors lists a four-hour tour on private property overlooking the Huleia watershed and Haupu Mountain range. Its published sessions are 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Saturday, with check-in 15 minutes before each session. Confirm availability and your exact check-in instructions for the date you choose.

The company's contact page lists 3500 Rice Street in Lihue. That address alone is not proof of the tour meeting point. Follow the location in your booking confirmation, and ask the company if it is unclear.

Give the rappel its own half-day. We would avoid stacking another strenuous water activity immediately afterward just because it appears nearby on a map. Use the rest of the day for an unhurried meal or a viewing stop, and build in time for changing out of wet clothing.

These are the operators' published restrictions as of October 6, 2026. Both operators publish limits that can prevent participation. Ask before booking if any limit is uncertain; reaching a minimum age does not establish physical suitability.

Rappel Maui Classic Group Tour

• The FAQ lists age 10 or older and a weight range of 70–250 pounds. Participants are weighed privately at check-in.
• The tour page requires participants under 18 to be accompanied by an adult aged 21 or older, and legal guardians to sign waivers for minors.
• The FAQ requires participants to walk and hike without assistance and understand and speak English clearly without interpretation. It says the tour is unsuitable during pregnancy and is not recommended for people with hip, neck or back issues, heart conditions, or those taking blood thinners. Ask about other medical conditions or devices.

Da Life Outdoors Waterfall Rappel

• The listing specifies age 12 or older, 70–250 pounds, and a waist measurement of 22–48 inches. It does not recommend the activity for those over 65.
• It describes the activity as intended for physically fit participants who enjoy rugged activities. It says it is inappropriate during pregnancy or for people with back problems, recent surgery, bone or joint problems, or heart conditions.
• The company reserves the right to refuse participation if someone is unfit for the activity and asks uncertain guests to call before booking.

For someone who wants to watch, ask about that separately. Maui's FAQ says there is no non-rappelling way to join the course; companions can purchase Garden of Eden entry instead. Kauai advertises a spectator option for ages six and older that must be booked with a rappel participant. Confirm what that option involves before assuming it suits a child or someone with limited mobility.

The Hawaii Department of Health advises against swimming or wading in any freshwater stream or pond in Hawaii, especially with open cuts or sores, because of leptospirosis. Ask whether the route involves swimming, wading or other freshwater exposure. Private-property access, clear water and a guide do not remove that advice.

Maui County's flash-flood precautions warn that flooding can occur in sunshine when rain falls higher in the mountains, and caution visitors about slippery rocks and falling rocks. The National Weather Service says it is never safe to walk or drive into floodwater. Heed warnings, closures and shelter instructions even if you have already paid.

Maui says it operates rain or shine and may use stations away from the watercourse when water levels rise. That can change the experience you pictured. Ask which descents would run, whether any freshwater exposure remains, who makes the cancellation decision, and what refund terms apply. Do not interpret the operator's rain policy as proof that conditions are safe for you.

Maui's packing advice recommends longer swim shorts, lightweight pants or leggings, and a quick-dry shirt or rash guard to protect skin from the harness and elements. Bring a towel and a change of clothes. It supplies neoprene boots with felt soles; for the short walk in, the FAQ allows sandals, flip-flops or sneakers that may get muddy. Confirm Kauai's footwear and supplied equipment directly rather than applying Maui's rules to both tours.

Keep hands free for the activity. Maui allows securely body-mounted cameras, with helmet mounts available on request, but says you cannot hold a camera or selfie stick while rappelling. Its dry keg is not a guarantee against water damage. Leave valuables and luggage at your accommodation; ask about Kauai's camera and storage rules before bringing equipment.

Maui requests mineral sunscreen lotion. State law restricts selling or distributing for sale sunscreen containing oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription. Maui County's rule extends to the sale, distribution and use of non-mineral sunscreen without a prescription. Follow the applicable rule and the operator's equipment guidance; a “reef-safe” marketing label alone is not the ingredient list.

Start by comparing Maui activities on Viator or Kauai activities on Viator if you want to weigh other formats. These are island directories, not a promise that either rappel has an available listing there. For the two specific products, use their official pages to confirm what you will buy.

Maui's Classic page displays $240.84 per person including tax. Da Life's page displays $247.35 for a rappel participant and $95.50 for a spectator. These are the published prices as of October 6, 2026; confirm the final total and inclusions at checkout.

Maui recommends reserving at least 48 hours ahead and calling for bookings within 24 hours. Its posted policy charges a 10% cancellation fee for cancellations at least 48 hours before the event; within 48 hours there is no refund unless the company can replace you. It promises a full refund if it cancels. Failure to meet participation requirements at check-in can mean no refund. Apply the same freshwater and flood precautions to any alternative. Do not substitute an unsupervised pool swim or a DIY rope descent for a canceled tour. Match the outing to the group's mobility and current conditions, and stay on permitted routes.

• Check the whole group's fit. Age, weight, waist size where required, uphill hiking, health restrictions and communication requirements come before a reservation.
