Watch wild spinner dolphins from shore or a boat, and give them room. Since October 28, 2021, federal rules have prohibited swimming with, approaching, or remaining within 50 yards of Hawaiian spinner dolphins in covered Hawaiʻi waters. The rule applies to people, boats, kayaks, paddleboards, drones, and other objects.
Our recommendation is to plan an outing you would enjoy even without a dolphin sighting. Start with shore viewing if it fits your day. If you want a boat trip, choose the route and experience first, then ask how the captain handles dolphins. We recommend choosing another trip if the itinerary promises swimming with wild Hawaiian spinner dolphins in covered waters.
