Choose a Na Pali boat tour in this order: passenger restrictions, departure harbor, then snorkeling or dry sightseeing. That order helps avoid paying for a boat someone cannot board or planning a drive to the wrong harbor.

Check Hawaii travel alerts for current access and harbor notices. Confirm that your exact sailing is operating, and confirm its check-in time and location with the operator before leaving your lodging. A tour listing alone does not establish today's availability.

Check Kikiaola before booking: DLNR's harbor page, updated September 10, 2026, lists Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor as closed until further notice. Operator pages that still name Kikiaola do not confirm that a departure is operating. Contact the operator about your exact boat and date before paying or driving there.

Port Allen, on the south side: Capt Andy's FAQ lists Port Allen for its Star catamarans. The company's FAQ estimates about 30 minutes from the south shore and 1 hour 45 minutes from the north shore. Check your route against current road notices and allow extra travel time. Holo Holo's Niihau expedition also lists Port Allen.

Kikiaola Small Boat Harbor, on the west side: Capt Andy's FAQ and Na Pali Riders list Kikiaola as their raft departure harbor; see the DLNR closure notice above before making plans. Capt Andy estimates about 45 minutes from the south shore and two hours from the north shore. Its FAQ says paid parking is managed separately, with rates posted at the harbor.

Makana needs a vessel check. The Makana tour page lists most of its fleet at Kikiaola and Amelia K at Port Allen. The Kikiaola listing conflicts with the DLNR closure notice above. Ask Makana to confirm the operating vessel and meeting point for your date.

Hanalei Bay, on the north shore: Na Pali Catamaran lists Hanalei departures. If you are staying north, compare its exact trip and boarding requirements before committing to a drive south or west.

Use our Kauai lodging guide to compare bases, then map the operator's check-in address from your accommodation. Save the address and leave a margin for parking and traffic.

Start with a catamaran if shade, a restroom, and room to move matter to your group. Then check the actual vessel. The category covers very different boats.

Capt Andy's FAQ describes its 65-foot Star yachts as more stable than its rafts, with shade and restrooms. Its catamarans are too large to enter the sea caves. Capt Andy says its catamaran restrooms are on a lower deck reached by a ladder. Ask about boarding and restroom access before booking if stairs or balance are a concern.

Do not turn that into a rule that all catamarans stay outside caves. Makana advertises cave exploration on its catamaran tours, when ocean conditions allow. Na Pali Catamaran lists covered seating and a restroom, a four-hour snorkel and sightseeing tour, and a three-hour winter sightseeing tour.

Compare the boat's seating, shade, restroom access, and boarding arrangements before comparing its photographs. Treat cave entry as a possible part of the trip, never a guarantee.

Rigid-hull inflatable rafts are the fast, wet, close-to-the-cliffs option. Capt Andy's 24-foot rafts carry up to 14 passengers, who sit on the inflated sides. There is no shade and no restroom on board, and the company describes the ride as bouncy and physically strenuous, with three rear high-back seats rotated among passengers rather than assigned (Capt Andy's FAQ). Capt Andy's rafts enter caves when the captain judges it safe, and selected Capt Andy raft tours include a beach landing at Nualolo Kai, again conditions permitting.

Na Pali Riders lists two raft products: a four-hour sea caves expedition with snorkeling and a three-hour sea caves expedition without it. Its home page lists ages 5 and up for both, but confirm the exact restrictions on the specific product page before paying (Na Pali Riders).

Read the passenger restrictions, seating description, and facilities for the specific raft you are considering before paying. For any Kauai Sea Tours option, check the operator's current vessel notices before treating it as an available alternative.

Pick the activity first, then the departure time. Capt Andy's morning Star sail includes snorkeling when conditions permit; its afternoon dinner sail does not. Holo Holo's sunset dinner cruise also lists no snorkeling. Check the specific product rather than assuming every afternoon trip follows the same format.

Makana's FAQ says morning departures tend to encounter calmer water as trade winds build later, but explicitly warns that neither morning nor sunset is guaranteed smooth. A sunset cruise is not a seasickness workaround. If you have severe motion sensitivity, consider whether an ocean tour fits your trip at all; ask a clinician or pharmacist about suitable prevention before departure, rather than following a universal medication schedule.

Holo Holo's Niihau and Na Pali expedition lists seven hours from Port Allen aboard a 65-foot power catamaran, with breakfast, lunch, and snorkeling. The itinerary includes an open-ocean crossing toward Niihau and Lehua. The operator says the captain chooses the route based on the day's conditions.

Compare the extra time on the water and the offshore crossing when deciding whether this itinerary fits your group. Our recommendation is to be comfortable with a full day on the water before choosing this over a shorter coast tour. Holo Holo warns that its tours cannot return early for seasickness.

Read the passenger restrictions for the particular catamaran before booking. Ask the operator about the exact vessel and ask your clinician whether the trip is appropriate for you.

Capt Andy's lists a minimum age of three for catamarans and six for rafts. Its Star sailing policy welcomes pregnant guests up to 26 weeks and asks those further along to contact the company before booking; it recommends consulting a doctor. Pregnant guests are not permitted on its rafts. Those are operator rules, not medical assurances.

Capt Andy's raft restrictions also cover past or present injuries to the head, neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees, feet, hands, or other joints, and other conditions a fast, bumpy ride could aggravate. Snorkelers must be able to climb the small reboarding ladder.

Makana's FAQ and tour page give different minimum ages for Leialoha: seven in the FAQ and nine on the tour page. Get the rule for your exact boat and date confirmed directly before paying. Do not use another company's approval as a substitute.

Ask practical access questions: where you sit, what you must hold onto, how you board, whether reaching the restroom requires a ladder, and whether you can remain aboard during snorkeling. A statement that a boat has a restroom does not answer those questions.

Before paying, compare the exact vessel, harbor, and passenger rules on Viator's Kauai cruise and sailing listings. Use the operator pages linked above for boat details, and read the terms attached to the booking channel you actually use.

• Confirm the vessel and check-in address. Ask whether check-in is at an office, a dock, or another meeting point. Arrange transportation before departure day.
• Read the group-specific cancellation policy. Capt Andy's FAQ lists different group thresholds for catamarans and rafts. Holo Holo lists 24 hours' notice for parties of nine or fewer and 72 hours for ten or more. Your booking terms control; do not assume a universal 48-hour window.
• Separate cancellation from a changed route. Holo Holo says a weather cancellation by the operator receives a full refund, and a route change announced at check-in gives guests a choice to continue, reschedule, or receive a refund. Ask your chosen operator what applies if snorkeling or cave access is dropped.
• Leave a flexible day. We recommend an earlier tour date within your stay if trying again after a cancellation matters to you. A spare day leaves room to seek another sailing; it does not guarantee a seat.
• Pack for wind and spray. Bring sun protection, a light layer, a towel, and a waterproof bag for items you take aboard. Makana specifically says it does not supply towels. Check the boat's footwear and packing instructions, then use our Hawaii packing quiz for the rest of your trip.
