That is a reason to give resting pods space, not to time a tour around finding them in a bay. The final 50-yard rule prohibits swimming with, approaching, or remaining within 50 yards of Hawaiian spinner dolphins in waters within two nautical miles of the main Hawaiian Islands and designated waters bounded by Lānaʻi, Maui, and Kahoʻolawe. Do not intercept a pod or put a boat, swimmer, or kayak in its path. Keeping the minimum distance does not make disturbing the animals acceptable.

Manta rays (Mobula alfredi) are year-round residents of the Big Island’s Kona Coast. The night-snorkel and night-dive operations at Manta Heaven (Garden Eel Cove, off Kona International Airport) and Manta Village (off Keauhou Bay) run nightly, and the species shows up most nights of the year. The format is observation, not contact. You float at the surface holding a lighted board or hover near a downward-facing dive light. The light attracts plankton. The mantas come up from below to feed and barrel-roll under and around you. They sometimes pass within inches, but you don’t touch them. Hawaiian green sea turtles, the honu, are listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. (NOAA Fisheries: Green sea turtle) They’re common around the main Hawaiian Islands, though never guaranteed on a given day. Three places earn their reputation:

Laniakea Beach (“Turtle Beach”) on Oʻahu’s North Shore. Honu come ashore here daily to bask, and the volunteers from Mālama na Honu rope off a viewing distance and answer questions. Parking is brutal. Go early or accept the walk from the next pullout up the road.

Hoʻokipa Beach Park on Maui’s north shore. The east end of the beach (toward the lookout) hosts dozens of basking turtles most afternoons, especially at low tide. The cliff-top lookout is the cleanest viewing platform and saves you the parking-lot scramble.

Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach on the Big Island’s Kaʻū coast. Black sand, palm trees, and large green sea turtles basking together. The most photogenic of the three.

Two separate rules apply. NOAA and Hawaiʻi DLNR viewing guidance recommends a minimum 10-foot (3-meter) distance from a basking honu, and the volunteer monitors at Laniakea will politely but firmly hold you to it. The Hawaiian monk seal (Neomonachus schauinslandi) is one of the rarest marine mammals on the planet. Total population is roughly 1,600 individuals, with about 400 of those on the main Hawaiian Islands and the rest in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. (NOAA Fisheries: Hawaiian monk seal population) They’re federally endangered.

Sightings are unpredictable. A monk seal may haul out on a popular beach to sleep for the day and wake up surrounded by a roped-off perimeter and a NOAA-trained volunteer. Beaches where this happens regularly include Poʻipū Beach on Kauaʻi, Kaimana Beach in Waikīkī, and various leeward beaches on the Big Island. Pup-and-mom pairs get an even larger perimeter (NOAA recommends 150 feet), and mothers nurse pups for roughly five to seven weeks before weaning. (NOAA Fisheries: Viewing marine wildlife in Hawaiʻi)

The federal recommendation for a single seal is 50 feet of distance. (NOAA Fisheries: Marine mammal viewing guidelines) If you spot one and there’s no volunteer present, give it space and call the NOAA Marine Mammal Hotline at 888-256-9840 so they can dispatch a monitor. They appreciate the call.

The single biggest underwater payoff of a summer Hawaiʻi trip isn’t a charismatic species. It’s the reef. Trade winds slacken in summer, so leeward bays go glassy. Visibility on a calm summer morning at Hanauma Bay (Oʻahu), Molokini Crater (Maui), Kealakekua Bay (Big Island), or Tunnels Beach (Kauaʻi) is reliably better than in winter, often dramatically so. You’ll see endemic Hawaiian reef fish (yellow tangs, raccoon butterflyfish, the humuhumunukunukuapuaʻa, our state fish) often close enough to your mask that you don’t need perfect water clarity to enjoy the show.

Molokini boats sail from Maʻalaea Harbor on Maui most mornings. Kealakekua boats launch from Keauhou, and kayak rentals near Honaunau put you on the water from the south side of the bay. Tunnels is a walk-in beach on Kauaʻi’s North Shore, accessed through Hāʻena State Park (parking and entry now require an advance reservation).

Humpback whales: gone until early November. The first scouts typically arrive in Hawaiian waters during the second or third week of November, with peak season running January through March. Whale sharks: occasionally reported in summer Hawaiian waters but not common enough to book a tour around. If you’re lucky and a whale shark cruises past your boat, your captain will know.

Yes, for almost all of this. Most of the named beaches above are reachable only by car. Manta tours leave from Kona harbors. Punaluʻu, Hoʻokipa, Tunnels, and Mākua are remote drives from the main resort areas. A few logistics notes worth knowing before pickup day:

Tunnels and Hāʻena State Park on Kauaʻi require an advance parking and entry reservation for non-residents. Hanauma Bay on Oʻahu requires its own reservation up to two days out. Laniakea has limited roadside parking and a steady traffic problem. Kealakekua Bay restricts vessel entry, so kayak and tour-boat permits are the rule rather than the exception.

A summer Hawaiʻi trip isn’t a worse marine-wildlife trip than a winter one. It’s a different one. In summer you trade the loud-and-close humpback show for calmer water, peak visibility, year-round dolphins and manta rays, basking turtles, and the rare monk-seal sighting. The summer roster demands a little more planning and a willingness to take what the ocean gives you on the morning you’re there.
