Camping in Hawaii is a different animal from camping on the mainland. Fewer bugs, no bears, and for most sites no permit lotteries opening months out. What trips people up is the booking system itself. Legal campgrounds run through four separate agencies (state, National Park Service, county, and private concessionaires), and the good ocean-front sites can fill fast even in shoulder season.

Fall, roughly late September through mid-November, is one of the easier seasons to actually camp in Hawaii. Trade winds moderate. Rain stays mostly on the windward sides. Summer holiday crowds are gone, winter break crowds haven't landed yet, and most campgrounds still have open nights inside the standard 30-day booking window. If you've been thinking about trying it, this is a good time.

Here's how the systems work, and where to actually go on each island.

Nearly every legal campground in Hawaii falls under one of four booking systems. Which one you're dealing with depends entirely on who owns the campground.

Hawaii State Parks use the official Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi reservation system. This covers state-park campgrounds and cabins on Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and Kauai. You create an account, pick a park, pick your nights, and pay online. DLNR's Oahu camping rules limit stays at one park to five consecutive nights and require a 30-day wait before returning to the same park. The current Oahu fee schedule lists $20/night for residents and $30/night for non-residents at standard campsites. Booking windows and stay limits can vary by island, park, and accommodation, so check the island-specific rules before choosing flights. Popular cabins and coastal sites can fill quickly after their calendars open.

National Park Service campgrounds reservable via Recreation.gov now include Kulanaokuaiki at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes, plus Hosmer Grove and Kīpahulu at Haleakalā. Both Haleakalā campgrounds used to be first-come, first-served walk-ups; that changed, and advance reservations are required. Standard NPS entrance passes cover the park fee, and camping fees are extra.

County parks are a separate layer. Honolulu County (Oahu), Maui County, Hawaiʻi County, and Kauaʻi County each run their own beach-park campgrounds with their own permit portals, rules, and rates.

Private concessionaires handle the fourth slice. Friends of Malaekahana on Oahu, Camp Olowalu on Maui, and the Volcano House concessionaire that runs Nāmakanipaio at HAVO all manage bookings outside the state and federal reservation portals.

Oahu has more campgrounds than most visitors realize, and most of the ones people actually stay at cluster on the windward side between Waimānalo and Kaʻaʻawa. Drive-in options on the West side and South Shore are limited.

• Malaekahana Beach. The standard first choice. The DLNR side of the park (Kahuku section) books through Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi. The southern section, Kalanai Point, is run by Friends of Malaekahana, a nonprofit concessionaire that also rents rustic beachfront cabins and A-frames. Long white-sand beach, ironwood trees for shade, calm-enough water for a morning swim.
• Kahana Bay. A lush deep-cut bay backed by the Koʻolau range. State park, with permits through Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi. Quieter than Malaekahana and one of the greenest sites on the island.
• Bellows Field Beach Park. A Honolulu County park with public camping Friday through Monday morning only, adjacent to a military recreation area. Camping requires a county permit; book through the Honolulu County camping site as far in advance as their calendar allows.
• Kokololio Beach Park. Quieter Honolulu County beach park near Lāʻie. Check the county camping calendar for the currently permitted nights before shaping the rest of your itinerary. Grassy sites sit right behind the beach.

Oahu's interior mountains (the Koʻolau and Waiʻanae ranges) don't have drive-in camping, and there are no NPS-run campgrounds on the island. If you want NPS camping in Hawaii, that means Maui or the Big Island.

Maui gives you the widest altitude range of any Hawaii camping trip. You can sleep at sea level next to a black-sand beach one night and above 6,000 feet in a cloud forest the next.

• Waianapanapa State Park. The marquee state park campground on Maui, near Hana. Black-sand beach, sea caves, tent campground, and cabins. Reservations run through Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi; review the reservation details for the entry requirements tied to your overnight stay. Cabins are extremely popular and difficult to reserve.
• Hosmer Grove Campground. The drive-in NPS campground inside Haleakalā National Park, at about 6,800 feet. Tent-only, with a covered pavilion and pit toilets. Advance reservations through Recreation.gov are now required; the old walk-up system is gone. Bring warm layers, since overnight lows drop into the 40s year-round and can go colder in fall. • Kīpahulu Campground. The other Haleakalā NP campground, at the park's coastal Kīpahulu district past Hana (near the ʻOheʻo Gulch pools). Tent-only, ocean cliffs. Also now on advance reservations via Recreation.gov. It's a long drive from anywhere and that's the point: you get the Kīpahulu district to yourself in the mornings and evenings before day visitors arrive.
• Camp Olowalu. Private oceanfront campground in Olowalu on West Maui, south of Lāhainā and north of Māʻalaea. Tent sites, tentalows, and cabanas, booked directly through campolowalu.com. Not cheap by camping standards, but one of the few oceanfront overnight options on that stretch of coast right now.

Hawaiʻi Island has the most camping options of any island by a wide margin: a mix of NPS, state parks, and Hawaiʻi County beach parks, spread across elevations from sea level to well over 6,000 feet.

• Nāmakanipaio Campground & Cabins. The main drive-in campground inside Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, at about 4,000 feet in a cool eucalyptus forest. Both tent sites and rustic cabins are operated by the Volcano House concessionaire. Its campground page directs campsite guests to call for reservations and tent-rental options; you may also bring your own tent equipment. Wake up minutes from the caldera rim.
• Kulanaokuaiki Campground. The small backcountry-style drive-in campground at HAVO, out on Hilina Pali Road. No water, pit toilets, extremely dark skies. Reserved through Recreation.gov; check the HAVO camping page for current conditions.
• Spencer Beach Park. An oceanfront county campground on the Kohala Coast just south of Puʻukoholā Heiau. Sheltered swimming, lifeguards, pavilion, showers. Hawaiʻi County park, with permits through the official county camping reservation system.
• Punaluʻu Beach Park. The famous black-sand beach on the Kāʻu coast, with a small county campground behind it. Sea turtles regularly rest on the beach; give them the 10-foot buffer they're legally owed.
• Kalopa State Recreation Area. Up in the Hāmākua rainforest above Honokaʻa. Day-use and overnight access need confirmation. DLNR's September 30 release says both reopened, but its October 2 dated notice lists camping closed and an undated line on the same page lists the park closed. Confirm both with DLNR before visiting or relying on a reservation.
• Mauna Kea State Recreation Area. At 6,500 feet on the Saddle Road side of Mauna Kea. Cabins only, no tent camping. A good staging option if you want an early morning at the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station without driving up from the coast in the dark.

Kauaʻi's campground list is short but stacked. Two of the most memorable overnight experiences in the state live here.

• Kokee State Park. About 3,600 feet up in the interior rainforest above Waimea Canyon. The state campground is closed for improvements through spring 2027. The separately operated Kokee Lodge cabins remain the overnight option to check. Wake up to cloud forest and drive ten minutes to the Kalalau Lookout before the day-trippers arrive.
• Polihale State Park. The campground at the far end of Kauaʻi's west side, past the last paved road. The final approach is a rough dirt road where a higher-clearance vehicle is recommended and conditions can be poor after rain. Once you're there, you're camping under some of the darkest skies in the state next to a 17-mile beach. Permits run through Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi.
• Kalalau Trail backcountry camping. The 11-mile trail into the Kalalau Valley requires a separate DLNR overnight permit and is genuinely serious hiking, not a casual first camping trip. Permits open a defined window in advance and sell out quickly. The Napali Coast State Wilderness Park page has the current rules and links to the reservation system.

Molokai has a state-park option for a genuinely remote night. On Lanai, do not build a visitor itinerary around camping without confirming the current policy directly; use established lodging as the dependable overnight plan. A ferry or interisland flight is part of either trip.

• Palaʻau State Park on Molokai (near the Kalaupapa Lookout) takes reservations through Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi.

Palaʻau is quieter, smaller, and further off the tourist track than most campgrounds on the four main islands.

Most Hawaii campgrounds are drive-in, so weight isn't the issue it would be on the mainland. What matters more:

• Rain fly and ground tarp. Even in the dry-ish fall shoulder, an overnight shower is possible on any windward campground. Don't rely on your tent's built-in floor alone.
• Warm layers if you're going up. Hosmer Grove at 6,800 feet, Mauna Kea SRA at 6,500 feet, Kokee at 3,600 feet. All drop into the 40s or lower overnight. First-time Hawaii campers routinely underestimate this.
• Water. Many state park and county park campgrounds have potable water; some don't, and some have water that's marked non-potable. Assume you're bringing your own or a filter until you've confirmed the specific campground has usable water.
• Reef-safe sunscreen. Non-negotiable at any coastal campground. Hawaii's reef-safe sunscreen law restricts the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate, and the reason it exists still matters more than the law itself.
• Awareness of tsunami zones. Every beach-park campground on this list is in an evacuation zone. Know where the nearest higher ground is before you go to sleep. The state Emergency Management Agency maintains the current maps.

You'll want a rental car for almost any Hawaii camping trip. Public transit doesn't reach most of these sites, and gear plus food plus a driver plus one or two passengers rarely fits into a compact. Hawaii's camping reservation calendars are unforgiving. A rough guide for the fall window:

• Waianapanapa cabins. Check the Explore Outdoor Hawaiʻi calendar early and book as soon as your dates become available; cabin booking windows can differ from tent campsites.
• Kokee Lodge cabins. Book directly through the concessionaire and be flexible on nights.
• Nāmakanipaio cabins. Usually easier to grab in fall than the summer or winter peaks, but don't wait until the week of.
• Kalalau Trail permits. Sell out quickly once the release window opens. Have accounts pre-created and a plan for who's clicking.
• Malaekahana, Kahana Bay, Polihale (tent sites). Often available within a week or two of arrival in fall, but weekends still tighten up.
• Bellows and Kokololio (Honolulu County). Weekend-only camping means the calendar moves faster than you'd expect for county-park sites.
• Hosmer Grove and Kīpahulu (Haleakalā NP). Now on Recreation.gov advance booking; check availability early rather than assuming a walk-up will work.

One more note on the fall window: hurricane season officially runs through November 30. In practice, storms that reach the islands do so mostly in August and September, and by mid-October the risk drops considerably. Check the National Hurricane Center before locking in nights on the windward or south coasts. And if a rare fall Kona low system is in the forecast, the coastal campgrounds can be miserable even when the interior stays dry.

Camping in Hawaii isn't the cheapest way to sleep here. The ferry ride, the rental car, the airfare, and the gear you can't fly with all add up. But it's a legitimately different experience of the islands. A morning cup of coffee at a picnic table at Malaekahana, or watching the mist come off the Koʻolau at Kahana Bay, or reading in a Kokee cabin while it drizzles outside: none of that is available from a hotel balcony. Fall is when it's easiest to actually pull it off.
