During the summer months the ocean is fairly calm, making Sunset idea for swimming and snorkeling or just relaxing on the beach. You can also peer into a few tide pools to observe some of the wonders of nature.

Be careful of the Sunset Rip, a notorious riptide current off shore. Take caution during the winter months when waves can reach heights of twenty five feet. From June through September there are incidents of stinging limu (seaweed). Obey all postings and warnings.

This is one of the most famous beaches in the world. The two mile stretch of white sand coast is fronted by hotels and tourist facilities. The area is excellent for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, catamaran and outrigger canoe rides. It's likely that if you are staying in Honolulu, you'll be staying near Waikiki. Even if you are not into crowds (and there will be A LOT of tourists here) it's worth a visit just to say you walked on Waikiki.

This little treasure has plenty of soft sand and seclusion for a morning of peaceful sunworshipping or swimming. This beach used to be about a mile long but development has caused erosion, making it about a half-mile. But a great half mile! The two lovely offshore islands make it a picture postcard spot. The wind is also good here for sailing and windsurfing. There is even some good snorkeling to be had. Access is only available by the public access walkways. Please respect residents property.

There is no lifeguard out here or amenities. Watch out for the Portugese Man-of-War (jellyfish) and stinging limu (seaweed) especially from June through September. Lanikai Beach

This "Curved" bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. This is a great location if you want to see lots and lots of fish fairly easily, even if you are new to snorkeling and scuba. There is a large sandy beach perfect for sunbathing and there are several hiking trails leading to breathtaking lookouts.

The bay provides some protection from large ocean waves and allows swimmers a terrific opportunity to view the reef life in a safer, protected environment. However during sometimes of the month (generally 9-10 days after the full moon) the box jellyfish come out in force. Best to keep out of the water then. This beach can be pretty crowded. It's best to get there around 9 a.m. if you want to get a parking spot.

In 1990 the city decided it was time to clean up the bay by limiting the amount of visitors who could access it each day and building an education center. You will be required to view a short video about conservation before going down to the shore.

$1 per car parking fee, $5 per person admission fee for those 13 years or older, $1 per person shuttle bus fee each way (this is optional - there is a good, but steep, road from the parking lot area to the beachfront). Open from 6:00am - 7:00pm, closed on Tuesdays. Hanauma Bay

Even when the surf is rumbling on other nearby beaches Pokai is generally calm. A protective break off shore provides a shield which makes the waters especially safe for swimming with children.

During the summer months the water is calm and great for swimming with a large sandy beach area. But watch out during the winter months when the waves can reach heights of thirty feet. This is the home of the largest, most dangerous and spectacular surf in the world. It's best to just sit back and watch mother nature at work.

There are lifeguards, picnic areas, a restroom, showers and phones at this beach.

This is a fine spot for swimming when the surf is calm. However, when the surf is up, this beach can be treacherous due to the shorebreak and rip tide currents. Experienced bodysurfers find that the waves here have no equal any where else on the island. However, novices should not even consider bodysurfing at this dangerous location.

The water is calm and warm. The location is stunningly beautiful with the Kualoa Mountains in the background.

There are lifeguards here on the weekends in the summer. There is little reef area here making it a poor spot for snorkeling. However there is fishing, some picnic areas, BBQ grills, restrooms, showers and phones.
