Location: Waikiki and Honolulu
This is one of the most famous beaches in the world. The two mile stretch of white sand coast is fronted by hotels and tourist facilities. The area is excellent for swimming, surfing, boogie boarding, catamaran and outrigger canoe rides. It's likely that if you are staying in Honolulu, you'll be staying near Waikiki. Even if you are not into crowds (and there will be A LOT of tourists here) it's worth a visit just to say you walked on Waikiki.

This beach used to be about a mile long but development has caused erosion, making it about a half-mile. But a great half mile! The two lovely offshore islands make it a picture postcard spot. The wind is also good here for sailing and windsurfing. There is even some good snorkeling to be had. Access is only available by the public access walkways. Please respect residents property.
There is no lifeguard out here or amenities. Watch out for the Portugese Man-of-War (jellyfish) and stinging limu (seaweed) especially from June through September.

This "Curved" bay was declared a protected marine life conservation area and underwater park in 1967. This is a great location if you want to see lots and lots of fish fairly easily, even if you are new to snorkeling and scuba. There is a large sandy beach perfect for sunbathing and there are several hiking trails leading to breathtaking lookouts.
The bay provides some protection from large ocean waves and allows swimmers a terrific opportunity to view the reef life in a safer, protected environment. However during sometimes of the month (generally 9-10 days after the full moon) the box jellyfish come out in force. Best to keep out of the water then. This beach can be pretty crowded. It's best to get there around 9 a.m. if you want to get a parking spot.
In 1990 the city decided it was time to clean up the bay by limiting the amount of visitors who could access it each day and building an education center. You will be required to view a short video about conservation before going down to the shore.
$1 per car parking fee, $5 per person admission fee for those 13 years or older, $1 per person shuttle bus fee each way (this is optional - there is a good, but steep, road from the parking lot area to the beachfront). Open from 6:00am - 7:00pm, closed on Tuesdays.

This is a fine spot for swimming when the surf is calm. However, when the surf is up, this beach can be treacherous due to the shorebreak and rip tide currents. Experienced bodysurfers find that the waves here have no equal any where else on the island. However, novices should not even consider bodysurfing at this dangerous location.

A beautiful, secluded beach near Kailua Beach Park in Kailua. You won't find the same crowds here as you will at Kalama's neighboring beach, Kailua. Kalama's gentle waves make it a great beach for beginner surfers and body boarders. Plenty of shady spots offer respite from the sun.

Goat Island is a pancake shaped lava rock 720 yards off the coast of the Malaekahana Recreation Area. The center of the island is a restricted refuge area for ground-dwelling birds raising their young. The waters surrounding the island are great for snorkeling. There are tide pools, perfect for observing small sea life, and a sandy beach studded with coral formation and shallow water.
You must swim/wade to the island so it is important to pass during low tide and during calm seas. The walk usually takes about 15 minutes and requires reef shoes to protect your feet from the sharp rocks. It takes about 20 minutes to walk around the island. Make sure to stay out of the center of the island where the bird sanctuary is.

This beautiful north beach is the home of the famous Banzai Pipeline. When the surf is pounding, this beach can be the most spectacular and the most dangerous in the world. When the waves are steep and powerful they break furiously on the shallow reef. In calmer (usually spring and summer) swimming is good with some of the best sand bar type surf on O'ahu.
