West Maui

With plenty of sunshine and an abundance of rainfall (as much as 390 inches a year), West Maui was once a major Hawaiian population center and the proverbial playground of royalty (the ali'i) in old Hawai'i. Today, West Maui has become the playground of visitors from around the world. You'll now find the resort areas of Ka'anapali (southwest) and Kapalua (northwest); visitor communities of Napili (northwest), Kahana and Honokowai (mid-way); and historic Lahaina town (southwest) gracing the shores of western-most Maui.

You may be wondering why we've joined the two portions of West Maui together here but split them up elsewhere on our website. The only reason we split these locations up is because of the roads. Southwest Maui is one of the more developed portions of the island, with several resorts and small towns. This remains the case for the westernmost portion of northwest Maui as well. But as you continue clockwise along northwest Maui and begin to move east again, the road continues deteriorate quickly and many rental agencies prohibit your driving in this area. The road improves again near Waihee Valley as you get closer to Kahului and the rest of Central Maui. But hopefully this clarifies why we've broken West Maui up into two regions.
