Waihee Ridge Trail

Have you ever wanted to stand at the top of a mountain in utter silence and commune with the clouds? That is exactly what you’ll be able to do on the Waihee Ridge Trail. The 5-mile round trip trail ascends 1,500 feet through a lush forest of kukui, guava, ohi’a, and ferns. The earlier you start the trail the better chance you have of viewing the Waihee Valley without clouds. When you arrive at the trailhead it may not seem like much of a trail. You have to pass through a cattle-proof gate and up a 200-ft cement road that is far steeper than it looks. None the less the initial incline will have you almost hating this trail before it even begins - but KEEP going, it's about to get really good. At the top of the incline, catch your breath and take a first peak over at Makamaka’ole Falls on your right. At the trail sign you'll veer to your left into a pasture and soon enter the forest.
Just after three quarters of a mile, you’ll again be treated to a better view of Makamaka’ole Falls. There are a few other falls to see on the trail but most of them are far away and buried in the green-draped valleys of the West Mau‘i Mountains. After about a mile you'll really start to be rewarded with amazing views of the valley. The trail goes in cycles of flat and steep areas culminating in a series of switchbacks that lead to the end, a hill called Lani-ili. At 2,563 feet you may be blessed with a clear view of the valley or you may be treated to a sea of clouds. Either way this is certainly a priceless experience. There is a picnic table at the trail's end if you would like to eat a snack or have lunch.

To reach the trailhead, take Highway 32 west out of Kahului until you reach Highway 330, about three miles. Turn right on Highway 330 and continue until it becomes Highway 340 at mile marker 2. At 9/10 mile past mile marker 6 is the Maluhia Boy Scout Camp on the left. Turn left on to this road and it is approximately 1 mile up hill until you reach a small parking area.
Trail Difficulty: Moderate
Distance: 5 miles round trip

Make sure you leave to have plenty of time to stop and enjoy the view. We arrived at 4;00pm and they close the gate at 6:00pm we made it to the top in 1 hour and 45 min. We are in great shape and were pressed for time. Other passerby's that were making there way down it took them 4 1/2 hours to make the hike to the top and then another hour or more to come down. The view is spectacular even if it is covered in clouds. The peace of no sound, not a peep from a bird or bug makes you appreciate the silence of the heavens. If you can make the time, it's well worth it! aloha

Is it easy to follow the trail? Would you recommend to get a hiking guide for this trail?

My husband and I just hiked this trail today and it was absolutely amazing. It is not too difficult, and we would definitely say that the initial concrete slope that you have to walk up is the hardest. Up closer to the top there is some looser dirt so it is nice to have some good shoes with grip (mine did not so there was a little slipping). There is no hiking guide needed as the trail is really clear to follow. There are times where you are really just walking along the edge of the amazing. Even if there are clouds at the top this trail is incredibly worth while because all the way up you have amazing views around you. We found clouds at the top, but it was just incredibly peaceful. We stayed a while to have some grapes, and at times the clouds cleared on the west side to reveal the valley below, just beautiful. I have to admit, I have an almost paralyzing fear of heights, and was hyperventilating during one of the parts of the decent where you have drops on either side of you. But this is no reason not to do the hike. It was our favorite hike so far, so amazing. I 100% would recommend this trip to anyone. p.s. make sure to bring plenty of water (we went through 3 bottles), you are indirect sunlight for much of the hike, unlike many other trails.

This is a great hike and probably the best I have ever been on. The first 200 hundred feet are the hardest and the switchbacks can be annoying but the views and the scenery make it all worth it. I definitely recommend this hike! Go early in the morning, my boyfriend and I started at 8 am and had the trail pretty much to ourselves going up. Coming down however, there were a lot of hikers going up and the trail was pretty crowded. An early start is definitely the best.

This is a great trail. Somebody said there were people who took 4 and 1/2 hours to go up the trail!?!?! Wow were they crawling? I take a brisk hike up the trail and it takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes. Then I jog down the trail and it takes me about 35 minutes. I like to go early in the morning or late in the day, it's not a very hot trail but humid enough that you will sweat!
