Southeast Maui

Southeast Maui, as defined by use, basically is everything from the Kipahulu area south to the ocean, and west to Upcountry Maui. This is typically a region of Maui many visitors either avoid or skip. Currently, as of mid-2007, it's actually closed (due to rock slide danger). What’s intriguing about this part of Maui is how different it is from the Hana Highway directly across the island. Haleakala stands in between these two halves of the island and the change is nothing short of amazing, a tropical rainforest on one side and prairie grassland and near desert on the other. It is beautiful on this side of Haleakala though, and you can get some amazing coastal views and a rare look at the back of Haleakala’s missing mountain-side that was eroded away in the distant past only to be partially filled again in the more recent (geologically speaking) lava flows.
