Maui Regions and Areas

Maui District MapThere is much talk, if not controversy, about how to split up Maui by region so that it can easily be described on a website such as this. Why the controversy you ask? Well, Maui, like all the Hawaiian islands, is part of a county politically divided into several districts, clockwise: Lahaina, Wailuku, Makawao, and Hana (seen here). Since Molokai and Lanai are also technically inside Maui county, they are also districts, but we're ignoring them here. Quite honestly, to the modern day traveler these districts serve no purpose.

The remedy then is to find a way to divide the island into segments that are easy to recognize, describe, and access via the major roads of the island. This is where much of the debate comes from. Every "expert" has their own way of dissecting the island into pieces.

Our way is pretty simple and it's a method we've followed religiously in all of our physical guidebooks. We like to take the North, East, South, and West approach and we've stayed as true as possible to that format here online (see the map below to the right). In general, we've adjusted some region names as needed and kept others to preserve common reference. I'm sure some of you will disagree and send off an email to us, but this system has worked rather well for us and as noted, we're aware others have their own preferred method of dividing up the island.

Ultimately we've divided the island in a manner that helps us group spots together so that they are easily accessible along the major routes of the island. This allows us to use our mile by mile directions to easily and accurately describe each spot here on our website.

Hi
I am writing this to let you all know that we rented the new and "Best" Garmin tour to HANA. Well 'NOT'.
This item is the biggest waist of time. Garmin doesn't give much information. The friends that we were with had the CD
the last time out of the THREE times that they took this trip. They took us on this HANA drive thinking that Garmin tour to HANA was the latest information. WELL DON'T I REPEET 'DON'T US THE GARMIN. Us the CD. Garmin "Very" expensive and not worth the money.
Also we spent the night there so we could take our time and explore. The service that carries the Garmin is located in the same shop as the Aquarium strip mall and they charged us for two days because we could not return it by 7:00am the next day. $70 +. DON'T DO THE GARMIN.

I think eventually GPS will be the future of tours, but right now it's still a very expensive venture and business. Clearly it also has some issues. While we do hear good things about the CD's, we've personally never made one bc of the limitations - especially considering more and more folks drive the Hana Highway and Pi`ilani Highway in reverse (counter clockwise).

We personally still feel a guidebook is the best option (other than printing out material from the web). While all of our Hana Highway information is freely available on the web, we've also compiled each spot in our guide:

We just returned from Maui and used your guide as well as the GPS unit. We found both to be very informative and helpful. The GPS only cost us about $30 as we returned the same day through their drop box. Not "VERY" expensive in my book. To each his own, I guess.

We'd definitely recommend both your info and the GPS to all of our friends. We had a great hana experience.
