Pokowai Sea Arch
Location: Southeast Maui

As you continue on Highway 31, beyond mile marker 29, you should see a pull out makai. Here you can view the Pokowai Sea Arch. The arch was formed when flowing lava from the volcano collided with the cold Pacific waters, creating an arch formation.Take Highway 31 past Hana, past Kaupo. Around Mile Marker #29 the sea arch can be seen from the road - pullouts located near the shoreline are the safest spots to see and photograph this site. Pokowai Sea Arch

This hike is located near the Oheo Gulch which is about 15 minutes past Hana, near mile marker 42. The Kahakai Trail stretches a quarter-mile between Kuloa Point and the Kipahulu campground near the 'Ohe'o Gulch. Shoreline views along the ocean are beautiful, but be mindful of your step. Of the three trails in the area, this is the one to skip, but given it’s so short you might as well enjoy it while here. The parking lot is on the makai side of the road. Admission is $10 and you can find out more information from the ranger. Kahakai Trail

Kaupo Town
Location: Southeast Maui

As you travel south along Highway 31, the turnoff to Mokulau is just before mile marker 35 (makai side) and before the town of Kaupo. Turn left onto the dirt road leading toward the ocean. You will pass Hui Aloha Church and cemetery. Park along the road and then walk to the shoreline. From here you can get some of the best views of the south east Maui coastline. There are also several lava outcroppings in this area.

The Kaupo Store right beyond this stop (past the 35 mile marker) is your last place to pick up snacks before reaching Tedeschi Winery near Highway 37. Kaupo Town

On your way to see one of the premier waterfalls on Maui you will cross over the Ala'alaula Stream just beyond mile marker 46. As you cross the bridge you will notice a small waterfall mauka (inland). It is nothing special at all, the best is yet to come at Wailua Falls. Alaalaula Falls

You'll have to get out and stretch your legs to see this little beauty of a waterfall on the Hana Highway. Just before mile marker 43 you'll come to a bridge crossing the Pua'a Lu'u Stream. Cross the bridge and park at a pullout on the mauka side of the road. You'll have to cross the road to a large tree where the path begins. This relatively short falls rarely, if never, runs dry because it is not dependent on seasonal rainfall to supply it. You'll want a pair of sturdy shoes for this little hike and some insect repellent for the insatiable mosquitoes. Puaa Luu Falls

Nu'u Bay is a little rocky patch of "beach" in Southeast Maui. When the water is relatively calm and the wind is at a minimum, swimming and snorkeling can be enjoyable. Do not go out too far because the current is strong. The best spot to do this is on the east side of the beach on the rocky peninsula.

This is an isolated location. If the ocean is rough, stay away from the shoreline, the nearest hospital is many bumpy miles away. The nearest phone is at the Kaupo General Store.

The depth of the ocean at this location can surprise you. Only about 100 feet from the shore the bottom begins a gradual plunge. A diver can get to 120 feet pretty easily. The sand and environment are dark, bring a light.
