Queens Bath
Queen’s Bath is a large natural “pool” which has been carved out of a lava shelf. The ocean acts as its filter which makes it dangerous to visit during the winter months when the surf is rougher. In the summer months the water is often calmer and you can see into the pool even without goggles. Small fish and other ocean life enjoy the beauty of Queens Bath and you will meet them if you decide to take a dip. Occasionally the government will close the bath due to dangerous conditions. This location is not without danger as many people have been swept into the ocean by rogue waves. Proceed at your own caution.
The hike down from the parking lot is easy and enjoyable. It skirts a freshwater stream which terminates in a small waterfall. From Queen's Bath you will have a jaw-dropping view of the coastline with rugged lava cliffs and pounding waves that send sea spray high into the air. After you are done enjoying the pool, walk around to some of the other inlets and look for honu (sea turtles). They graze on the algae on the sides of the lava.
To reach Queen’s Bath, turn right on Ka Haku Road right before mile marker 28. Turn right on Punahele and right again on Kapiolani. Park along the road at the end of Kapiolani and follow the dirt trail along the stream for about 25 yards. At the end of the trail turn left for about 300 yards to the Bath. If you are here at sunset you’ll be in for quite a sight. The views are absolutely breathtaking as the sun sinks below the horizon with nothing between you and Alaska to the north.
